On September 18, 2024, the Ministry of Communications, Department of Posts, issued SB Order No. 07/2024, informing all Heads of Circles/Regions about amendments to the National Savings Scheme Rules. This notification, dated August 29, 2024, and published in the e-Gazette on September 5, 2024, details changes to the National Savings Scheme Rules, 1987, and 1992. The amendments include the introduction of new clauses effective October 1, 2024, which eliminate interest accrual on balances held under these schemes.

For the period from March 1, 2003, to September 30, 2024, the existing rules provide for an interest rate of 7.5% per annum, calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 10th and end of the month, and credited annually. However, from October 1, 2024, balances will no longer earn interest. This change affects both the National Savings Scheme Rules, 1987, and 1992. The order instructs for widespread dissemination and posting in all Post Offices to ensure that the public and all stakeholders are informed and can take necessary actions in response to the new regulations.
