The Government of India, through the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, issued Notification No. 03 (RE-2004)/2004-09 on 31st August 2004, under the powers granted by the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, and the Foreign Trade Policy 2004-2009. This notification introduces the ITC(HS) Classifications for Export and Import Items for the period 2004-2009. The classification system will take effect starting from 1st September 2004. The ITC(HS) classification provides a framework for categorizing export and import items in alignment with international trade practices. This notification aims to ensure smoother regulation of trade and facilitate a clearer understanding of export and import procedures in India. The classification system’s implementation will assist in streamlining trade processes and promoting the efficient management of exports and imports within the country.

S.O. (E) In exercise of powers conferred under section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 read with paragraph 2.1 of the Foreign Trade Policy, 2004-2009, the Central Government hereby notifies the ITC(HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items, 2004-2009 as contained in Annexure to this notification, which shall come into force from 1st September, 2004.
