In Notification No. 24 (RE-2001)/1997-2002, dated 14th August 2001, the Government of India introduces a restriction on the import of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) and their parts and products. The amendment, made under the powers of the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, adds a new entry to Chapter 1A of the ITC(HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items, 1997-2002. Import of whale sharks and their derivatives is now restricted, with export permitted only under a specific license. This change is implemented to regulate the trade of whale sharks and their products, ensuring compliance with environmental and conservation guidelines.

NEW DELHI: 14th August, 2001
S.O (E) – In exercise of powers conferred under section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 read with paragraph 1.3 and 4.1 of the Export and Import Policy, 1997-2002, the Central Government hereby makes the following amendments in the ITC(HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items , 1997-2002 published on 31st March, 1997 (RE-98) as amended from time to time, namely –
2. The following shall be added after paragraph 14 of Chapter 1A (General notes regarding import policy) of ITC(HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items, 1997-2002:
“(15) Import of Whale shark (Rhincodon typus) and parts and products of this species shall be restricted.”
3. Under schedule 2 table A the following clauses shall be inserted in the end:
