The Central Bureau of Investigation has today arrested Commissioner of Central Excise, Delhi in an on-going investigation in a case registered against him; a Superintendent, Central Excise, New Delhi; a middleman and others for demanding an illegal gratification of Rs.60 Lakh from a mobile phone importer.The Superintendent of Central Excise and the middleman were earlier arrested on 02.01.2012 by CBI.
It was alleged that a managed farce search of the importer’s office was conducted by the Central Excise team headed by the aforesaid Superintendent on the instructions of the Commissioner. No records were created before, during or after the searches. Initially an illegal gratification of Rs. 2 crores was allegedly demanded, which was finally settled for Rs. 60 Lakh.
The middleman collected illegal gratification of Rs. 20 lakh as well as a “self” cheque of Rs. 20 lakh from the importer for not taking any action against him. Out of this, the middle man delivered a cash of about Rs. 3 lakh to the superintendent in his office on 2.1.2012. This was recovered during the raids of CBI on 2.1.2012 itself.
Further investigation is continuing.
