Service tax Return Filing Due Date Extended to 20th January 2012
Central Board of Excise and Customs has extended the last date of submission of half yearly return for the period April 2011 to September 2011 from 26th December, 2011 to 20th January, 2012.

In exercise of the powers conferred by Rule 7(4) of the Service Tax Rules 1994 read with notification No. 48/2011-Service Tax dated 19th October 2011, Central Board of Excise and Customs hereby extends the date of submission of half yearly return for the period April 2011 to September 2011, from 6th January 2012 to 20th January 2012.
This is being done in view of the fact that assessees are facing problems in electronic filing of returns due to various reasons.

In case of need extensions for compliance with statutory requirements should be granted, for a reasonably longer period instead of repeated but short extensions from time to time.. Furthermore, extensions should be notified well in advance. In this case we find that extensions have been granted after 3-4 days from end of earlier fixed limitation and the extension is for short duration. This caused repeated extension causing administrative burden on government departments as well as on tax payer. When there are reasons causing difficulties in filing of e-returns, and some more reasons are also found at different areas, it would have been better if extension was notified for a period of about two months.
