The results of the latest CA Final Examination (May, 2010) and Common Proficiency Test-Paper Pencil Mode (June, 2010) are out. Overall, the results have been a mixed bag. While the results of CA Final Examination are disappointing, the results for CPT are satisfying. Nevertheless, we heartily congratulate all those who have passed the examinations. Our special compliments to the rank holders.

We are pained to take note of the poor performance in the CA Final Examination. It is a matter of grave concern for all of us. We are comprehensively analysing the results and suitable remedial measures will be taken in near future. However, students need not feel disheartened as to me the word ‘no’ means ‘next opportunity’ and the word ‘end’ means ‘efforts never die’. It seems that over dependence on private coaching, which does not meet the requirements of the changed pattern of examination, and the in-sensitiveness towards practical training, have also been contributory factors of the poor results. We have been constantly reiterating that students should take both their articleship training and studies more seriously. Practical training would immensely benefit the students in their examinations as well as in gaining experience. Nevertheless, we assure the students to undertake all the measures to mitigate their hardships.

At the same time, we would like to clear the myth caused by the rumours spread by various parties with vested interests with regard to release of results by ICAI based on demand and supply factors. It has never happened in the history of ICAI that a student, who is otherwise passing, has ever failed. Also, it is worthwhile to note that when economy was in the slowdown mode, the results were much better compared to the present when the economy is in much better shape. It clearly goes on to show that the results are based only on the performance of the students rather than any extraneous factors.

The CPT results, overall, are satisfactory but the better was expected. A total of 27.55% (35168) out of 127643 students have passed the examination. What is heartening to note is the large number (43979) girls appearing for examination. Not only this, the girls have outperformed boys with a pass percentage of 31.72% (13950) compared to 25.36% (21218) of the boys. We hope that the results will be even better in times to come.

To conclude, let’s stress on the need for change in our professional outlook in tune with changing times, if we want to call the next decade as the decade of Indian Chartered Accountants. Change is constant, it is signal for rebirth. By changing the inner attitudes of our minds, we can change the outer aspects of our lives. The only thing we must not change is our commitment to our professional ethos and ethics. Let’s optimise our independence with responsibility, integrity and professional panache.

Mr. President. Only the fools will accede to your comments regarding low pass percentage in final. This is not the first time this has happened. Please go to results history and have some soul searching. One more thing regarding girls pass percentage being higher than boys. In the first place, publishing such infformation is ridiculous and creates gender differences and serves no purpose. Even if it is published, what about gender ratio in final results? Nowhere I can find the gender ratio for final results. What does that mean, Mr. President? You people only want more and more students to join this profession so that your coffers are full of money. You people are not worried about the student’s future. Make the entrance tough to get through instead of penalising the students for so many years. Mr. President, I have no hesitation to say that you people are motivated by something else in deciding and publishing the results. Each and everyon reading my comments please analyse the results. For last some terms it seems favours have been made in the results. You people can see girls topping just by a whisker. Ridiculous. This sudden change of heart towards females. This is nothing but consumerism induced by and coming through higher levels and capitalists. Failures do not get disheartened. I have come accross and know many persons who are not professionals like CA/MBA/CS and only B.Com. but have got finest knowledge of commerce which even these CAs do’nt have. Not only that I have also come accross CAs who got ranks in late 90s when becoming CA was like a dream come true and those rankholders are nowhere in mncs. My point is that these professional exams are more theory based rather than practicle, more so at the entrance level. That is why you are seeing these type of absurd results where students (particularly girls devoting much time to theories and less to practical) reciting theories get through while students who have the practicle knowledge but can’t absorb (may be due to lack of sufficient time) these theories ultimately fail. I have come across students who even after being qualified seek help for most of their queries while their juniors execute the work without seeking much help. What you are doing Mr. President to alter this? I think you have no answer. Best of luck to you and to the consumerism.

    Dear president of ICAI
I have appeared in may 2010 examination and got much less than expected usually I failed by 8 to 10 marks now this term when my direct tax paper was very good I got only 45 marks I do not know who have assessed the copy and what was in their mind while assessing the student future. for MICS I scored last term 57 it slipped to 47 in this paper I was sure to get exemption but the person assessing the copy killed my enthusiasm. Day to day institute is bringing new policy how to make money now new policy is that old student now will have to adopted new course if they want to continue their ca career by paying Rs 1100/ because old course is phasing out from may 2011 exam.

    Mr.President Sir
I think all the decisions taken by council member ONLY to benefit its Practicising Members.Ask from your heart and you will see how Institute is playing with the careers of lacs of students. They are used by their principles like slaves without any consideration being paid neither in the form of knowledge nor stipend. And after that they are spending thier golden years of their youth in writing Exams repetetively.I would urge MCA and Govt. of India to come forward and take action against ICAI and save students from going to take wrong path.

  5. CA. ASHOK AGGARWAL says:

I am of opinion that present students who start doing CA on the basis of +2 are not doing well with studies reason being the questions set in exams are more practical based while the coaching taken by articles is based on theory books plus students do not have practical training resulting in poor results with high expectations keeping in view huge packages offered by MNCs.

  6. CA.AKS says:

    Mr. President of ICAI,

All you expresed is just to satisfy and justify your frustation towards the private teachers who are making crores by providing tutions. As a facility ICAI provides nothing..Just check the quality of “Revisionary claases” “ITT Training”, “GMCS classes”…Just go and experience the level and quality.

You points out that “traning matter”…many of CA firms have no quality work at all…what you expect what students would learn from them…Instead students should have option to work in private fields…say listed companies or having turnover above 10 crore or any such organization fullfilling prescribed norms. Traning…Traning…Training…I got really fed up with this. I learnet a lot in a month in a company compared to 3 years in a CA firm.
Make training meaningful not a toucher procedure where all smart students loose their wisdom and smiles.
Article Clerk are more or less bounded servant being paid Rs.1000/-Per Month and with no transfer they have no option but to bear their bosses.
ICAI is providing cheap labour to its fertinity.
I am really ashamed to see ICAI politics coming in BOS and Examination.

Lacs of brilliant minds are being harrased.

    ICAI never attempted to raise

How ICAI puts marks on papers I cant understand.

An extensive investigation should be carried by MCA.

I strongly want to draw the attention of MCA and Ministry of HRD to this fact and would request them to take corrective action and separate this regulation and education wing of ICAI.

I also appeal all the members to raise voice against this anti-students policy of ICAI, students are asset to ICAI and this country as large,

    Regards,

  7. Balwant Jain says:

I fully agree with what Dr. Paras Jain has written in the message. Like him I am a rankholder chartered accountant, a parent and used to be principal of articled clerks. I also must have motivated a lot of students from lower income group to join chartered accountancy as career. A few of them are already qualified. I used to tell them that this is a poor men’s MBA.
But now looking at the pass percentages of final, only a few people will be willing to take this risk with their career.I would not date ask anyone to choose Chartered Accountancy as career.
With a lot of new members abandoning the pracice in favour of job in industry and with such dismal results, I am afraid the government will introduce something on the line of tax return preparers for conducting audit of SMEs etc.
The institute need to make the entry test stingent like entrance exams for enginerring, MBA or Medical profession, where once you are in your are assured of the qualification.

  8. drparasjain says:

    Mr. President Sir,

With due respect . I wish to submit that your comments on the students are mere excuses to justify the bad results.

I am a member and I am also a parent and I have also been a principal to aticled clerks . Yet, sometimes I feel ashamed by the way we shabbily treat the students.
Of late ICAI has been being more and more harsh and merciless on the students. Those , who have appeared in Finals, were brought here by our own filters -CPT/PCC et al . Our first input to final output ratio is less than one to a thousand. doesn;t it mean a tacit confession that ICAI coaching is not upto the mark.
I have the unfortunate feeling that soon we will see a a large exodus from Indian CA to US CPA/CFA. No other course , a student has to go into a mandatory pre-exam training with no certainty of results.
I must have motivated a score of students all from very lower income group to CA course but no more.

  9. Mutthuswamy says:

    Sir,
You have rightly pointed out the requirement of hard work and practical training by the students taking the examination. Unfortunately large number of students do not undergo comprehensive study. Coaching classes or tutions should work only as guides to the students to solve their difficulties while studying. Your regional offices all over can help these aspirants.

  10. P K Rastogi says:

Our honourable president says about the importance of practical training and self study, but the result goes in the favour of those who never ever know about practical training. There is no credit given to those who got very hard training.

  11. Devadatha Kumar SR says:

It really surprises me, why the pass percentage is so conservative. The real cause of the low percentage of pass needs to be examined throughly, and corrective action taken to keep the confidence of students appearing for this Ace Professional Course. If any change in the pattern of studies are required, the ICAI should suggest the same for the benefit of the students. Hope some professional organisation does a study in this regard and suggest.
