The figures were given out by the Union minister of state for finance S S Palanimanickam in reply to the questions raised by Parimal Nathwani, MP from Jharkhand and Group President of Reliance .

Gujarat’s figures stand small compared to those of Maharashtra where the Income Tax department operations have managed to seize assets worth Rs 105.43 crore this year. Nathwani had also enquired about figures from states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and the figures for these states stand as Rs 63.95 crore, Rs 35.84 crore and Rs 31.09 crore respectively. All the four states apart from Maharashtra and Gujarat showed a decline in income tax seizures compared to the fiscal before. Gujarat, however, had 606 seizure operations in 2006-07 compared to 2007-08 when the figure came down to 158. The worth of assets seized have risen from Rs 32.44 crore in FY07 to Rs 45.45 crore this fiscal.
