Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) vide its Notification No. 9/2012 dated 17th February, 2012 has exempted salaried employees from the requirement of filing the returns for assessment year 2012-13. The exemption is applicable only if all the following conditions are fulfilled:- • Employee has earned only salary income and income from savings bank account and the annual interest earned from savings bank account is less than Rs. 10 thousand. • The total Income of the employee does not exceed Rs. 5 Lakh (Total Income means Gross Total Income Less deductions under Chapter VIA).
Q.1. If there is mismatch between the actual tax deducted and the amount shown in form 26AS, how to get it rectified and claim the balance? It is advised to claim the actual tax deducted in the return. Such mismatch will be handled in accordance with Instruction No. 4/2012, in the following manner: (a) Where difference between claim and amount reported in AS-26 does not exceed Rs. 5,000, the claim shall be accepted; (b) Where zero claim is matching, the credit shall be allowed only after due verification by department; (c) Where there is claim with invalid TAN, the TDS credit for such claim is not to be allowed; and d) In all other cases, the credit shall be allowed after due verification by the department.

In FY2012, CPC processed 1.32 crores returns, a 47% increase over FY 2011. Rectification requests received by CPC has dropped from over 10% of returns filed in AY08-09, to 6.5% in AY 09-10, to 3.8% in AY 10-11 and further to just about 2.9% in AY 11-12. FY 2012 saw several milestones / records set by CPC. Between October 2011 and December 2011 , the Financial Accounting System (FAS) at ITDCPC was revamped completely with three rounds of enhancements which resulted in a quantum jump in daily throughput.
FAQ on Exemption from filing of Income-tax Return for Salaried having total income not exceeding Rs. 5,00,000 The primary objective of this notification is to exempt those salaried taxpayers from the requirement of filing income-tax returns, who have (i) total income not exceeding Rs. 5,00,000, and (ii) the total income consists only of income chargeable to income-tax under the head ‘Salaries’ and interest income from savings bank account if such interest income does not exceed Rs. 10,000.
PRESS RELEASE As a taxpayer friendly initiative, the Department has decided to set up Tax Kiosks at various places within CCIT regions. The Tax Kiosk would be a temporary structure set up for 1-2 days in a residential area such as apartment blocks in association with RWAs, large offices and other central locations of the cities.

The following assessees have to file compulsorily e return only: – Limited Companies – Compulsory Audit Cases – from A.Y. 2012-13 Individuals/HUFs having Total Income above Rs. 10 Lakhs and assessees who have got foreign assets. To be filed with digital signature only for Limited Companies and for others whose accounts are audited u.s. 44 AB. If filed without digital signature the acknowledgement in Form V duly verified is to be sent to CPC within 120 days by ordinary or speed post.
According to a CBDT Notification, only a specified class of persons has been exempt form the requirement of furnishing a return of income for the assessment year 2012-13 subject to certain conditions. Class of persons implies an individual whose total income for the assessment year 2012-13 (in financial year 2011-12) does not exceed Rs. 5 lakh (i.e. it is Rs. 5 lakh or below Rs. 5 lakh) for the whole of 2011-12 and consist of only incomes chargeable to income tax under the income heads of ‘salaries’ and / or ‘income forms other sources’ earned by way of interest from a saving bank account in a bank not exceeding Rs. ten thousand.
