It is likely that the extant central and state levies of indirect taxes on the domestic production and sale of goods and on provision of services may be replaced by the levy of central and state Goods and Services Taxes from 1 April 2010.
States have finally reached a consensus on having two basic rates under the Goods and Services Tax, slated to be rolled out on April 1, 2010. There will be one standard rate of taxation and another low rate of taxation for essential commodities.
The Finance Minister announced a slew of amendments on both income-tax and service tax fronts to achieve the objective of generating economic activity in the present environment of economic slowdown
Asking the state finance ministers to resolve the pending issues expeditiously, the Centre on Thursday said introducing Goods and Services Tax was critical for economic reforms. “We also need to focus on the introduction of GST from April 1, 2010. This is a critical part of our economic reforms,” Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said while […]
At present, the tax, which is levied on inter state sale of goods, is at 2%. It was scheduled to be reduced by another 1%, starting April 1, 2009. At the time, the rate cut was postponed on account of the general elections and the Election Commission’s code of conduct. The new foreign trade policy, which is being prepared by the commerce ministry, will be aligned with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) only after implementation of this indirect tax mechanism. The new policy is likely to be announced by the next government at the Centre by mid-2009, while the GST is likely to be […]

Following an agreement between the Central Government and the State Governments, the rate of Central Sales Tax was reduced from 4 per cent to 3 per cent in this financial year. It is now proposed to reduce the rate to 2 per cent from April 1, 2008. Consultations are underway on the compensation for losses, if any, and once agreement is reached the new rate will be notified. I am also happy to report that there is considerable progress in preparing a roadmap for introducing the Goods and Services Tax with effect from April 1, 2010.
