The Union Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee said that during the global financial crisis of 2008, our GDP growth rate lowered to 6.8 per cent in 2008-09 but the economy rallied back with an 8 per cent growth in 2009-10. Shri Mukherjee said that the overall GDP growth in 2010-11 was estimated at 8.5 per cent and there is no reason why this momentum cannot be maintained in fiscal 2011-12 and improved further in the coming years.

PSU banks should be made to bid for surplus funds with the state-owned firms, rather than getting them through a common rate of interest, the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) has said. In a communication to the Finance Ministry, the DPE has written to the Finance Ministry arguing that these banks must compete among themselves for deposits of the PSU firms, which had a surplus of about Rs 2.50 lakh crore at the end of March, 2010.
India is likely to allow foreign individuals to invest in mutual funds in the next two weeks but with a cumulative cap of USD 10 billion, an official said today. The detailed guidelines are being worked out jointly by the finance ministry, RBI and Sebi. These will be notified by the capital market regulator, the Finance Ministry official said.

By March 31, 2012, banking facility will be available in 73,000 villages across the country going by the current pace of work, Mukherjee said after inaugurating a Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch at Talai under Raghunathganj police station area in Murshidabad district.
The finance ministry is bringing under one umbrella the intelligence and criminal investigation units of the Income Tax department to enhance prosecution powers to counter terror financing and check transactions that pose threat to national security. The department will now train and designate its officials in the rank of Inspectors as ‘Special Agents’ and ‘Agents’ (Criminal Investigation) while the newly-created Directorate of Criminal Investigation will be headed by the Director-General of Intelligence (Income Tax).
