ICAI – A brief report on the meeting with the officials of Central Bureau of Investigation held at CBI Headquarter, New Delhi

Pursuant to initiatives taken by the Professional Development Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, the Central Bureau of Investigation has shown keen interest in the diverse role performed by Chartered Accountants. On specific request made by the Central Bureau of Investigation, the ICAI was asked to make a presentation as to the role of Chartered accountants to assist the investigation process performed by the officials of the agency. In this perspective a presentation was made at the CBI headquarter New Delhi wherein the ICAI was represented by the following:

Central Bureau of Investigation was represented by Shri Ashwini Kumar, Director, Shri U S Dutt, Joint Director, other Joint Directors and all senior officials were present on the occasion. Shri Piyush Anand, DIG, CBI coordinated entire programme.

It was an historical occasion where two professional bodies interacted with each other to carry forward the mission of serving the society. CA. Uttam Prakash Agarwal, President ICAI stressed the role of professional Chartered Accountants in serving the society. He also drew the attention of the participants to recent corporate scam and clarified the role of auditors as well as that of the Institute in the present environment. On this occasion, CA. Anuj Goyal briefly explained the evolution of the Institute and activities performed by it as a regulator of the accountancy profession. He also touched upon the disciplinary process followed by the Institute. Dr. Vishnu Kanehere in his comprehensive presentation highlighted that how the domain knowledge of Chartered Accountants can help in the prevention as well as discovery of frauds. According to him, Chartered Accountants also help in setting up of the systems which prevents occurence of fraud. He also referred to the various techniques of forensic audit and other tools like CAATs, Benford Law etc. for detecting the fraud. He explained the fraud detection techniques with several case studies.

Shri Ashwini Kumar, Director greatly appreciate the role of the profession and described it as a momentous occasion where two independent professional bodies aim to achieve the common objective of serving the society. He assured that it is the beginning only and further joint training programme would be undertaken in the areas of common interest. CA. Uttam Prakash Agarwal, President, ICAI assured CBI that the Institute shall provide all kinds of assistance in the larger interest of the country.
