CA AMAR JIT CHOPRA-AN INTRODUCTION :
COUNCIL MEMBER FROM NIRC
Mr. Amarjit Chopra did his post graduation in commerce from Delhi University in 1973. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in the year 1975 and since then has been in practice as a senior partner of G S A & ASSOCIATES, (formerly known as Surendar K Jain & Co.) New Delhi . He was elected to the Northern India Regional Council (NIRC) of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India for two terms 1985-88 and 1988-91. He was the Chairman of NIRC for the year 1988-89. He was elected to the Central Council of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India for the term 1998-2001, 2001-2004, 2004-2007 and was reelected for the fourth consecutive term 2007 onwards.

 During his term as a Council Member he has been member of all the three standing committees namely Executive, Disciplinary and Examination. He has also been the chairman of Corporate Laws Committee, Expert Advisory Committee and Financial Reporting Review Board. Corporate Governance Committee, Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AASB) and committee on Internal Audit. He was Chairman Professional Development Task Force of Jammu & Kashmir & Stgate Jammu & Kashmir Branch. He was also the Vice-Chairman of Electoral Reforms Committee,  Accounting Standards Board (ASB), Professional Development Committee (PDC).  He has also been member of other non-standing committees of ICAI namely Research Committee, Accounting Standards Board, Auditing Practices, Fiscal Laws Committee, Continuing Professional Education Committee, Export Advisory, Continuing Review of Education and Training (CRET), Central Budgets Finance Committee, Audit Committee, WTO, Committee for Members in Industry, Committee on Financial Markets and Investor’s Protection, Committee on Accounting Standards for Local Bodies, Corporate Laws, Golden Jublier Celebrations, Financial Report Review Board, Peer Review Board etc.

 He also represented ICAI on Core Group of Common Interest between ICAI, ICSI and ICWAI and on the Standing Committee of ICAI and IBA.

 He was also nominated to the Committee of Information Technology and Committee for Quality Control of SAFA as well as to the Committee on Corporate Governance of SAFA. Presently he has been nominated on the working group of the South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA) on the study of Corporate Governance Practices in the South Asian Countries.

 He was also a member of group for revision of MAOCARO, constituted by the Govt. of India. He was also nominated by the Institute to National Advisory Committee on Corporate Laws constituted by the Government of India for a period of two years 2002-2007.

He was also nominated by the Punjab Government on Committee for fixation of fee for Medical colleges/ institutions.

  He was appointed Inspector u/s 237 of the Companies Act, 1956 by the Government of India to investigate in the affairs of M/s Xerox India Ltd (formerly known as M/s Xerox Modicorp. Ltd.)

  Presently he is Chairman, Accounting Standards Board (ASB), Vice Chairman – Ethical Standard Board and member of various Standing/Non- Standing Committee contributed by ICAI e.g. Corporate and Allied Laws, Corporate Governance International Affairs, Internal Audit, Ethical Standards Research Committee, Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, Editorial Board, Trade Laws and W.T.O etc.

  He has been nominated by ICAI as member on Secretarial Standards Board of ICSI Project Implementation Committee of Ministry of Surface & Road Transport, Cost Accounting Standards Board of ICWAI, Task Force for Cost Accounting Standards on Arms Length, Banking and Financial Services Sectional Committee –MSD –7, Member on the Interview Board of United Bank of India, and Director of Accounting & Research Foundation (ICAI).

  He was also actively associated with teaching in Delhi University for a period of almost 20 years and is presently visiting faculty for number of management institutes.

  He has contributed papers and been a faculty in seminars/ conferences organised by ICAI its Regional Councils, branches and Study Circles. He has also contributed papers at international conferences at Dubai , Sri Lanka and Pakistan . He has recently been nominated by ICAI on the Project Implementation Committee to pursue the implementation of Accrual Accounting in The Ministry of Road Transportation  & Highways. He has also been a faculty at number of seminars organized by various Chamber of Commerce, C & AG, and other bodies.

  He has represented the ICAI in the National Standards setters meeting on IAASB in London and Brussels .

  He has been speaker in International Conference on Quality Control of Audit and Corporate Governance at Dubai , Karachi & Sri Lanka.

  His special areas of interest are Bank Audit, Company Law Matters, Internal Audit, Accounting Standards, Audit & Assurance standards.

  He is Independent Director in various reputed companies and was nominated by the Bank/Financial Institutions to the Board of Mahaan Proteins Ltd (Nominee of Risk Capital & Technology Corporation Ltd) and Jotindra Steel Tubes Ltd (Nominee of Union Bank of India). He has been nominated as CA Nominee Director by the Central Government on the Board of Bank of Baroda, a leading Public Sector Bank, for three years, beginning October 2006.
