A short while ago, we put out the monetary policy measures accompanying this Review. Based on an assessment of the current macroeconomic situation, we have decided to: Cut the cash reserve ratio (CRR) of scheduled banks by 50 basis points from 6.0 per cent to 5.5 per cent of their net demand and time liabilities (NDTL). This will be effective the fortnight beginning January 28, 2012. This reduction in the CRR will inject around ` 320 billion of primary liquidity into the system.

Since the Second Quarter Review (SQR) of Monetary Policy in October 2011, there have been significant changes in the global scenario. On the one hand, concerns over the sustainability of sovereign debt problem in the euro area have intensified. On the other, there are modest signs of improvement in the US. In the emerging and developing economies (EDEs), growth has been moderating, reflecting the sluggishness in the advanced economies and the impact of earlier monetary tightening. Overall, notwithstanding the signs of recovery in the US, global growth prospects have weakened since the SQR.

RBI/2011-12/363 – The Reserve Bank in its Third Quarter Review of Monetary Policy 2011-12 issued on January 24, 2012, decided to reduce the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) of Scheduled Commercial Banks by 50 basis points from 6.00 per cent to 5.50 per cent of their Net Demand and Time Liabilities (NDTL) with effect from the fortnight beginning January 28, 2012.

RBI clarifies Small savings interest rates will remain fixed

RBI Circular No. DGBA.CDD. No.H- 4836 The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has clarified that interest rates on small savings schemes, except the PPF, will remain fixed throughout the term of schemes. In a circular, RBI said interest rate for small savings will be declared on April 1 every year and will remain valid till the maturity of the scheme. The circular has been released as a clarification after it observed that news items are appearing in media conveying an impression that the interest rates on small savings schemes linked to government securities are floating in nature and will undergo change depending on the yields.

Master Circular No.8 /2011-12 (Updated as on January 20, 2012)-. This Master Circular consolidates the existing instructions on the subject of Compounding of Contraventions under FEMA, 1999 at one place. The compounding of contraventions under Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999 is a voluntary process by which an applicant can seek compounding of an admitted contravention of any provision of FEMA, 1999 under Section 13(1) of the FEMA, 1999.

RBI to issue Rs 100 notes which will have the rupee symbol

The Reserve Bank will shortly issue Rs 100 notes which will have the rupee symbol. The design of the notes to be issued is similar in all respects to the existing Rs 100 in Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 issued earlier, except for the rupee symbol.

Over the last five years, a word became very popular around the world. It dominated discourses amongst policy makers. It consumed innumerable hours of prime time on television. It spanned across meetings in offices, dinner table conversations, and informal chit chat between friends. The word is ‘crisis’. It has become almost a norm for speeches and addresses such as this to start with a reference to the crisis. This address, and indeed the subject of this seminar, is no different. Yet the subject remains as topical today as it was five years back when the global financial crisis first came to light.

It has now been decided to permit all AD Category-I banks to grant permission to companies to hedge the price risk in respect of any commodity (except gold, silver, platinum) in the international commodity exchanges/ markets as specified under the delegated route. 3. Further, AD Category-I banks can also grant permission to unlisted companies to hedge price risk on import/ export in respect of any commodity (except gold, silver, platinum) in the international commodity exchanges/ markets subject to guidelines as specified in the Annex.
