Last year I provided relief to individual taxpayers by enhancing the exemption limit as a move towards DTC rates. Although DTC will not be effective from this year, I propose to introduce the DTC rates for personal income tax. I propose to enhance the exemption limit for the general category of individual taxpayers from `1,80,000 to `2,00,000.

The Government will present its 81st Budget proposals in the history of independent India, when the Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, tomorrow reads out his taxation and other economic policies before the Parliament. Individually, Mr Mukherjee will present the Union Budget for the seventh time, the second-highest by any Finance Minister.
Government Thursday slashed interest rate on deposits in Employees Provident Fund from 9.5 percent to 8.25 percent for 2011-12 affecting over 4.7 crore subscribers. This cut was proposed by the Finance Ministry and a notification was issued by the Labour Ministry, official sources said. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) had provided 9.5 percent interest rate to its subscribers for 2010-11 after it found Rs 1,731 crore surplus in its books of account.

Government had directed Indian Olympic Association to take up the issue of sponsoring of London Olympics, 2012 by M/s Dow Chemicals emphatically with the IOC to draw its attention to the sensitivities of the victims of the tragedy in Bhopal and that the association with the Dow Chemical Company militates against the fundamental ethical principles of the Olympic Committee. Indian Olympic Association took up the matter with the IOC to which IOC replied that Dow Chemical had no connection with the Bhopal tragedy since Dow did not have any ownership stake in Union Carbide until 16 years after the accident and 12 years after the US $ 470 million compensation agreement was approved by the Supreme Court of India.
