The government on Thursday said the accounting regulator ICAI has suggested that action can be taken against both erring audit firms and chartered accountants. The ICAI “has recommended to the government for amendments in the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, so that action can be taken against firms of chartered accountants themselves, in addition to individual chartered accountants, for misconduct,” Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) plans to introduce post membership qualification courses in competition law as well as corporate restructuring and insolvency in the next six months. Addressing reporters here, Anil Murarka, vice president, ICSI said, “We are going to roll out two new courses for our members in the next six months- one in competition law and the other in corporate restructuring and insolvency.”

The CBI is planning to question ex-Satyam chairman B Ramalinga Raju via video conferencing as he continues to dodge the special CBI court’s summons in connection with the multi-crore fraud in the IT firm he founded. Raju, the prime accused in the scam, is suffering from Hepatitis-C and is currently undergoing treatment at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here.
The Delhi High Court has quashed the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) decision against auditor P Ramakrishna in the Global Trust Bank (GTB) case. The decision comes as a relief for P Ramakrishna, who is a Partner in Lovelock & Lewes, a network affiliate of Price Waterhouse. ICAI held Ramakrishna guilty of professional misconduct in the Global Trust Bank probe.

Hyderabad court on Friday dismissed the petitions of two accused in the multi-crore Satyam fraud case seeking issuance of directions to the CBI to defreeze their saving bank accounts. Dismissing the petitions of former Price Waterhouse auditors — S Gopalkrishnan and Talluri Srinivas who sought defreezing of their bank accounts, special judge BVLN Chakravarti considered CBI’s contention that further investigations is pending in the case at this stage.
