DO No. 19/NewsLetter/CH(IC)/ 2024

Dear Colleague,

The record GST collections for April 2024, at 2.10 lakh Crore, drew national attention and praise, and rightly so! The numbers point towards excellent tax buoyancy attributable to growth in the economy as well as efficiency in tax administration. Hon’ble Union Finance Minister has openly praised the officers of both the Centre and the States towards this remarkable achievement. The renowned American inventor Thomas Edison once famously said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”. I truly believe that the dedication, diligence and hard work of CBIC and the States – in unison – exemplify this statement. At the same time, I must also thank the taxpayers who have kept their faith in the system and the tax consultants who have helped them in voluntary compliance with the GST provisions.

Last week, the office of Chief Commissioner (AR), New Delhi launched the 4th edition of e-Compendium of CESTAT case laws in favour of revenue. The e-Compendium is available on the CBIC website and is a searchable document for the benefit of the officers. My compliments to the team for bringing out this document after a lot of hard work!

In terms of enforcement actions, I noticed that the Customs officers of the Foreign Post Office, Delhi seized 2.85 Kg of MDMA tablets valued at Rs 1.43 crore in the illicit market. The drugs were concealed in two parcels containing clothes in the side walls of the cardboard box of one parcel and with clothes in the other. Despite the challenges, such cases give out an important message that the parcels are being monitored closely to detect smuggling. A fine effort by the officers of Delhi Customs!

Before I close for this week, on behalf of the Board and the Department, I wish a healthy and enjoyable superannuated life to Sh. Sanjay Pant, an officer of the 1990 batch. Beyond the Departmental work that you handled so diligently and deftly, your pleasing personality and melodious voice will always continue to inspire the officers who had the opportunity to work with you. My best wishes to your journey ahead!

Until next week!

Yours sincerely,

(Sanjay Kumar Agarwal)

All Officers and Staff of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes 86 Customs.
