Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today appealed to the Central government to lift the ban on cotton exports imposed recently and also remove export duty on cotton with immediate effect.
In a letter written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Modi said the decision has affected lakhs of cotton growing farmers in the state which accounts for 33 per cent of cotton produce in the country and 50 per cent of export.
“The farmers of Gujarat have produced cotton even after adverse monsoon and rising prices of agricultural inputs. But there is no system of support prices for cotton crop. The centre has created a situation where farmers will have no option but to fight,” he said in the letter.
“Cotton is the most important cash crop in Gujarat.
