DEDUCTION IN RESPECT OF LIFE INSURANCE PREMIA, DEFERRED ANNUITY, CONTRIBUTIONS TO PROVIDENT FUND, SUBSCRIPTION TO CERTAIN EQUITY SHARES OR DEBENTURES, ETC. [SEC. 80C, APPLICABLE FROM THE ASSESSMENT YEAR 2006-07] – SECTION 80C 1. Under section 80C, deduction would be available from gross total income. 2. Only an individual or a Hindu undivided family can claim deduction under section 80C. Eligible Amount -Any sums paid or deposited in the previous year by the assessee — 1. As Life Insurance premium to effect or keep in force insurance on life of (a) self, spouse and any child in case of individual and (b) any member, in case of HUF. Insurance premium should not exceed 20% of the actual capital sum assured.

Aviva Life Insurance launches online health plan – Aviva Health Secure

Aviva Life Insurance today announced the launch of its online health plan – Aviva Health Secure. The plan provides the policyholder with a lump sum amount on diagnoses of any critical illness covered by the policy thereby ensuring that the family has adequate funds to meet the unplanned medical expenses and get the best possible treatment. Available exclusively on the online platform, Aviva Health Secure can be bought for a nominal premium starting Rs 2000 per year from www.avivaindia.com. While the minimum sum assured is Rs 5 lakh, the maximum is Rs 50 lakh. The plan can be bought by a person from 18 years to 55 years of age for a minimum policy term of 10 years and a maximum term of 30 years.

The Finance Act, 2011 amended the effective age of a senior citizen being an Indian resident from sixty-five years of age to sixty years for the purposes of application of various tax slabs and rates of tax under the Income Tax Act, 1961 for income earned during the financial year 2011-12 (assessment year 2012-13). There are certain other provisions of the Act in which the age for qualifying as a senior citizen is now proposed to be similarly amended.

Deduction for Medical Insurance U/s. 80D on contribution to Central Government’s health scheme

Under the existing section 80D, deduction upto a sum of Rs. 15,000 on premium paid for insurance on the health (Mediclaim) of the assessee and his family. A further deduction of Rs. 15,000 is admissible if the medical insurance is taken for parents of the assessee. It is also provided in the existing provision that if the insured is a senior citizen, the said limit will become Rs. 20,000.

It is, therefore, proposed to also allow deduction in respect of any contribution made to CGHS by including such contribution under the provisions of section 80D. The deduction will be limited to the current aggregate as mentioned in the section.
