Union Finance Minister, Shri Pranab Mukherjee will inaugurate the biggest office building of the Income tax Department in India tomorrow. The building will house the offices of salary charges, non-corporate charges, International Taxation, Exemption and other allied charges, accommodating approximately 800 Officers and 1500 staff. It will also have an assessee friendly ASK (Aayakar Sewa Kendra) Centre. Pratyaksh Kar Bhawan at Civic Centre is a ‘green’ building.

India has signed a Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters. The Convention was signed by Shri Sanjay Kumar Mishra, Joint Secretary, Foreign Tax & Tax Research Division, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India in the presence of Deputy Secretary-General of OECD, Mr. Rintaro Tamaki. This instrument hitherto available for the members of OECD and Council of Europe was amended in 2010 and open for all countries in June 2011. The Convention was amended to respond to the 2009 G20 Summit call for developing a broader multilateral approach to improve the effectiveness of exchange of information, co-operation between the countries in the assessment and collection of taxes, with a view to combating tax avoidance and evasion.

Ministry of Finance, Government of India has commissioned an in-depth and fresh study, engaging three top national level institutions for estimation of unaccounted income and wealth held within and outside India. This study will bring out the nature of activities that encourage money laundering and its ramifications on national security. The study has already commenced in March, 2011 and is expected to be completed within a period of 18 months.
