Resuming its arguments against Rs 11,000-crore tax demand by the Income Tax (I-T) department, the British telecom giant Vodafone today contended before the Supreme Court that the present Indian income tax laws do not cover gains from overseas transactions. Senior advocate Harish Salve appearing for Vodadfone submitted before the apex court that under the present Income Tax Act, overseas transactions between two foreign companies cannot be taxed and it could be done by only by bringing a new law by Parliament.

The Registrar of Companies (ROC) of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh has served a showcause notice on 11,888 companies for violating company laws for several years. The companies had not filed balance sheets with the ROC for three years. Out of the total, 35 companies are listed and 22 are government undertakings. Those issued notice were 6,112 from Punjab, 4,002 from Chandigarh and 1,774 from Himachal Pradesh.
The I-T department has asked tax payers not to give out personal details like PAN card number and information about their credit cards on the internet in the wake of mushrooming fake e-mails hitting users’ inboxes. Viewing with concern the spurt in fictitious and unauthorised e-mails landing in personal internet addresses of many people, the department is adding a word of ‘caution’ at the end of each mail sent by them.

BIL had recieved a showcause notice from the income tax department to explain the withdrawal in 2003.
