The American banking sector continues to grapple with failures and on an average, ten banks are closing down every month. This year, 30 banks have already collapsed and the numbers are expected to rise in the coming weeks. A staggering 184 banks have folded up since the bankruptcy of the then Wall Street major Lehman Brothers in September 2008.
Applications for issue of passports under the Tatkal scheme are accepted if a verification certificate is submitted in the prescribed performa, duly signed by a designated officer of the Central/State Governments, or on submission of three prescribed documents. Two lists containing designated officers and prescribed documents are enclosed at Annexure A and B.
Although, the proposal is for setting up all twenty IIITs in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode, since industry participation may not be forthcoming in some States like in the North East, it is proposed that IIITs in the North East may be set up by the Central Government with contributions from Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER).

The Government has informed Lok Sabha that a Coordination and Monitoring Committee (CMC), co- chaired by Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Chairman, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has been set up to look into issues relating to companies that had come out with public issues and vanished and to monitor the progress of action taken against such vanishing companies and their promoters. Specific criteria have been adopted by CMC for identification of such vanishing companies.

The Government of India has authorized Financial Intelligence Unit – India (FIU-IND) to enter into Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with FIUs of other countries to exchange information pertaining to money laundering and terror funding. So far, FIU-IND has signed MOUs with FIUs of Mauritius, Philippines, Brazil, Malaysia, Russian Federation, Australia and Canada and information is being shared between FIU-IND and its counterparts. Further, India has entered into MOUs with China and Vietnam which find mention of crime relating to money laundering.

The Supreme Court has dismissed the plea of the excise department to levy service tax on IBM India’s application software — enterprise resources planning software system (implementation service). A bench headed by justice SH Kapadia rejected the plea of the commissioner of central excise alleging that IBM had failed to pay service tax on its enterprise resources planning (ERP) software system (implementation service) used to facilitate the flow of information between all business functions inside the boundaries of its clients’ organisations and manage the connections with outside stakeholders.
Though levy of service tax on domestic air travel is negative, given the rebound in air travel, the players can fully pass on the impact to customers through hike in fares. The budget proposes to increase the scope of air passenger transport service is being expanded to include domestic journeys and international journeys in any class from the earlier provision of taxing only international journey in any class other than economy class.
