DO No. 38/News Letter/CH(IC)/2024 Dated: 17th September, 2024

Dear Colleague,

The 54th GST Council Meeting was held in New Delhi last week under the Chairpersonship of the Hon’ble Union Minister for Finance, where key decisions were taken relating to changes in GST tax rates, providing relief to individuals, measures for facilitation of trade and streamlining compliances in GST. Officers are urged to stay updated on the outcomes of the Council meetings, as these decisions play a crucial role in shaping the tax administration and compliance landscape. It is equally important to actively communicate with taxpayers, ensuring they are well informed about the trade-friendly measures introduced by the Council.

In a fillip to courier exports and to encourage the e-commerce industry in India, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs has extended export-related benefits under Duty Drawback, RoDTEP and RoSCTL schemes for exports made through Courier mode w.e.f. 12th September, 2024. This initiative will strengthen India’s position in the emerging global e-commerce sector by adding lustre to the various policy initiatives, digital reforms and regulatory measures put in place by the Government.

The two-day annual conference of the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) was successfully held last week in Siliguri. The conference featured deliberations on wide-ranging topics such as advanced digital forensics, upcoming solutions in data analytics, emerging sectors in tax evasion, the use of technology for tackling financial frauds and the well-being of officers. DGGI also unveiled an e-coffee table book highlighting its journey and evolution over the years.

Last week, I interacted with trainee Inspectors of the 14th Induction Course in NACIN ZTI Jaipur. The trainee officers were from Nagpur, Mumbai and Jaipur Zones. The idea was to address the queries of trainees, sensitising them to the priorities of the Government and aligning their expectations with the vision of the department. I firmly believe that face-to-face conversations convey a message with connection, clarity and a better understanding of the intent.

Ms Malyaj Singh, an officer of the 2018 batch and presently posted in DGGI Pune Zonal Unit, has completed the prestigious Half Ironman West Friesland triathlon held in the Netherlands—one of the world’s most challenging endurance events—requiring the participants to complete a 1.9 km swim, 90 km cycling, and a half marathon of 21.1 km. Remarkably, Malyaj, conquered this gruelling challenge in 8 hours and 14 minutes, making her the first female IRS officer to complete the race. It is a historic accomplishment that reflects not just her physical endurance, but also her ability to push boundaries and set new standards. We are all proud of you and wish you will attain newer heights in times to come!

Until next week!

Yours sincerely,

(Sanjay Kumar Agarwal)
