Skill India Mission was launched by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, on 15th July 2015. Mission was launched with an aim to provide training in different skills to around 40 crore people in India by 2022.

Notably, as per the report, in 2014, India had only 2% of the formally skilled workforce. India was also dealing with a huge problem relating to employability amongst the educated workforce. In order to overcome all the employment related problems and also to enable the youth to develop needed skills, the Government came up with Skill India Mission.

The present article covers the objective of the Skill India Mission; features of the Skill India Mission; various departments working under the Skill India Mission; different categories for the Skill India Courses and a list of different schemes introduced for implementing the Skill India Mission across India.

What are the objectives of the Skill India Mission?

Various objectives of the Skill India Mission are highlighted hereunder –

  • To provide market-oriented skill training to around 40 crore people (youth) in India;
  • To bridge the gap between the talented youth and enterprises;
  • To create a space for promoting the talents of the youths, accordingly creating more job opportunities for them;
  • To develop existing sectors, already laying under skill development for many years, and recognize new sectors for new skill development;
  • To increase competitiveness in Indian business;
  • To reduce poverty;
  • To offer opportunities ensuring lifelong learning for developing skills;
  • To diversify skill development schemes so as to meet the crucial challenges; etc.

What are the features of the Skill India Mission?

The significant features of the Skill India Mission are –

  • To improve the employability of the youth in India;
  • To enhance entrepreneurship of the youth in India;
  • To support and offer training/ guidance to an individual for employment in both organized sector and unorganized sector for eg. Cobblers; nurses; carpenters; masons; weavers; etc.
  • To focus on developing sectors like transportation; construction; real estate; textiles; tourism; banking; jewellery designing and other sectors, wherein, the level of skill is inadequate;
  • To provide training that is compatible with the international standards to enable the youth to explore job opportunities outside India as well; etc.

Which are various departments working under the Skill India Mission?

The departments working under Skill India Mission and their duties thereof are explained in the table herein below –

Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship
  • To co-ordinate and verify skill development efforts across India;
  • To formulate vocational as well as technical training framework;
  • To bridge the gap between demand as well as supply of the skilled workforce; etc.
National Skill Development Corporation
  • To provide training capacities through the National Skill Development Corporation partner ecosystem developed in all the states and union territories;
  • To support various initiatives of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship; etc.
Sector Skill Councils
  • To provide linkages to the Vocational Education Training industry to a variety of teams.

What are the different categories for Skill India Courses?

Skill India Courses are broadly divided into the following categories –

1. Management and development programmes;

2. Training of trainer;

3. Entrepreneurship development programmes;

4. Skill development programmes;

5. Other skills.

What are different schemes introduced for the implementation of the Skill India Mission across India?

In order to ensure implementation of the ‘Skill India Mission’ across India, the Government has introduced a number of schemes, some are listed hereunder –

1. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana;

2. Jan Shikshan Sansthan;

3. Pradhan Mantri Yuva Yojana;

4. Skills Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion (SANKALP);

5. Skill Loan Scheme;

6. National Skill Development Mission; etc.
