On September 30, India and Mozambique signed a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) alongside two others which also supported economic co-operation: one regarding mineral resources, the other small and medium sized enterprises.

The document was signed in New Delhi and witnessed by Mozambique’s President, Armando Guebuza, and India’s Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, as part of Guebuza’s six-day visit to India. The two sides agreed to set a target of achieving USD1 billion of bilateral trade by 2013 and the three agreements should facilitate this.

“We both belong to the same Indian Ocean community and we share common concerns. It is in our mutual interest to ensure the safety and security of sea lanes of communication in the Indian Ocean,” said Dr Manmohan Singh. The two countries also discussed measures to tackle piracy.
