Union Finance Minister meets Institutional Investors; Confident of Reducing Fiscal Deficit; Hopeful of Economic Growth around 8.5 per cent during 2011-12. Union Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee has expressed confidence in reducing the fiscal deficit and achieving the target of 4.6 % of GDP announced in the 2011-12 budget. He said that the provisional figures for 2010-11 have given us strong reason to be hopeful in this regard.

Commerce Ministry has asked exporters to ‘keep their fingers crossed’ on their demand for extension of the DEPB, a tax neutralisation scheme on exports, beyond June 30. With the Revenue Department making it clear that the window of the Duty Entitlement Pass Book (DEPB) would close from June end, the exporters are lobbying hard with both the Commerce and Finance ministries for continuation of the sops.
The OECD on Wednesday pegged India’s growth at 8.5 per cent for the current fiscal, indicating that economic expansion would be slower. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development has projected the Indian economy to expand 8.5 per cent in 2011-12, much lower than the growth of 9.6 per cent witnessed in 2010-11 financial year.
The government has exempt salaried people earning up to Rs 500,000 annually from filing income tax returns. A move that will bring relief to about 80 lakh people was announced by the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee [ Images ] when he presented the Budget in February. On Tuesday, Pranab Mukherjee said this will be applicable in the 2011-12 assessment year for the income earned in 2010-11. He said that a notice to this effect will be brought out soon.

Union Finance Minister, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has said that the counterfeiting of our currency is a matter of great concern for the Government. The Finance Minister said that with a view to check this menace of fake currency, an exercise for introduction of security features in all denominations of Indian Bank Notes is under way. This is being piloted by Directorate of Currency, Ministry of Finance, the Minister added. Shri Mukherjee urged all concerned to have this task completed at the earliest in a given time frame.
The Finance Ministry is likely to set up Directorate of Criminal Investigation, a specialised wing to probe cases of black money, money laundering and terror funding, by the end of this month. A dedicated unit called Directorate of Criminal Investigation will look into the nexus between black money (which is illegally acquired), money laundering, and in extreme cases, terror funding. The Directorate would be notified within this month, a Finance Ministry official told PTI.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) will continue to enjoy the power of telephone tapping despite a strong recommendation by a Committee of Secretaries against it following a controversy in the wake of the Niira Radia episode. “The CBDT will continue to have the power of phone tapping subject to certain conditions,” an official said.
