The Union Finance Minister, Shri. Pranab Mukherjee today reviewed the global economic situation with RBI Governor, Dr. Subba Rao, and the Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, Dr.C. Rangarajan. The discussions focused on the slow economic growth in the US and debt worries in the Euro zone. Europe’s debt problem and worries about the world economy had resulted in sharp fall in the US and European markets. Stocks that were particularly affected in the US were those of companies that have global presence.
Union Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said there would be no more tax-free zones in the country. Tax-free zone status in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand was being withdrawn gradually following opposition by different states, Mukherjee said. Renewal of tax free zone status of Sikkim, which would expire in 2017, would be reviewed on the basis of the socio-economic conditions of the state at that time, he told reporters.

Names of chronic income tax defaulters would be made public as part of government’s crackdown on tax evasion and black money. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee disclosed Sunday that the government was working on a number of strategic initiatives to curb generation of black money and for its detection, including the feasibility and methodology of putting the names of chronic tax defaulters in public domain.

Gujral, Revenue Secretary, Shri Prakash Chandra, Chairman, CBDT, other Members of the CBDT and a distinguished audience. The preview of the film titled ‘150 years of Income Tax- A Journey Across Three Centuries’ was screened and an informative brochure, ‘A Journey across Three Centuries’, depicting the evolving role of Income Tax since 1860, was also released.
