THE Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has opposed State Bank of India’s (SBI) decision to appoint a single audit firm for its tax audit for the current fiscal, a move which it says could compromise its quality of audit as opposed to the bank’s present practice of getting the work done by multiple firms. The ICAI, which earlier approached SBI’s top management raising its objection on the issue but did not got a favourable response, is now planning to approach the Reserve Bank of India as it fears that the move could see other banks following suit. “

The Institute’s attention was drawn to certain news reports giving the impression that the Institute has mooted a proposal to open doors for MNC audit firms to operate in India.Consequent upon the Satyam scandal coming to light, the Council of ICAI had constituted a High Powered Committee to look into the matter.

As you are aware, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) was established on 1st July, 1949 for regulating the profession of Chartered Accountants in India. The Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 provides for the framework/scheme of regulation of the profession. The manner (including the procedure) in which such a regulation should be operational had been dealt with in the Chartered Accountants Regulations framed under the said Act.
