The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is likely to ask for powers to penalise errant audit firms, but only with prior approval from the government. The ICAI Council, the apex decision-making body that met last week, was divided on the issue of the regulatory agency for auditors getting powers to penalise firms as well.Instead, it agreed that the powers be used only in special circumstances, said members present in the meeting.

In a move to facilitate the students, the Board of Studies has compiled the comments of the examiners on all the subjects of the Final (Old) Course and Final (New) Course examinations held in May, 2010. The group-wise general comments of the examiners on the performance of the students have been summarised, which are followed by the question-wise specific comments on the mistakes committed by the students in different subjects.

The ICAI has argued that the bulk of the management accounting work is done by the chartered accountants, so addition of the word ‘Management’ to the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, or ICWAI, is misleading and should not be allowed.
Accounting profession watchdog Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will seek an amendment to the Chartered Accountants Act to expand its regulatory powers to cover audit firms. Currently, the institute has powers to regulate only its members — chartered accountants — but does not have a specific mandate under law to oversee audit firms operating in the country.
