Amidst pressure on the government to tighten the screws on inflow of funds from tax havens, India’s foreign direct investment from Mauritius and Cyprus, dropped significantly in 2010-11. While the FDI inflows from all the sources declined by 25% in 2010-11, the drop was steeper at about 33% to USD 6.98 billion from Mauritius. Likewise, the inflows from Cyprus were down by 44% to USD 913 million, according to the official figures.

The Government of India signed a Protocol, amending Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with Government of Singapore for effective exchange of information in tax matters today. The Protocol was signed by Shri Prakash Chandra, Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on behalf of the Government of India and Ms. Karen Anne Tan Ping Ming, High Commissioner of Singapore to India, on behalf of the Republic of Singapore.

Under intense pressure from the Opposition and the civil society on the issue of black money, the government on Monday said it has proposed re-negotiation by August of double tax avoidance pact with Mauritius, a route often said to be used to bring illegal wealth back to India.

India inks Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with Mozambique

The Government of India notified the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with the Government of Mozambique for the avoidance of double taxation and for the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income on 31st May, 2011. The DTAA provides that business profits will be taxable in the source state if the activities of an enterprise constitute a permanent establishment in the source state. Examples of permanent establishment include a branch, factory, office, place of management, etc. Profits of a construction, assembly or installation projects will be taxed in the state of source if the project continues in that state for more than 12 months.

The Government of the Republic of India signed a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with the United Republic of Tanzania for the avoidance of double taxation and for the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income on 27th May, 2011 at Dar-es-Salaam. The Agreement was signed by Shri K V Bhagirath, High Commissioner of India on behalf of the Government of India and by Mr Pereira Ame Silima, Deputy Minister of Finance on behalf of the United Republic of Tanzania in the presence of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and the President of Tanzania Mr Kikwete.

The Government of the Republic of India signed a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for the avoidance of double taxation and for the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income on 25th May, 2011 at Addis Ababa. The Agreement was signed by Shri S.M. Krishna, External Affairs Minister on behalf of the Government of India and by Mr. Sufian Ahmed, Minister of Finance and Economic Development on behalf of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in the presence of the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and the Ethiopian Prime Minister. Mr. Meles Zenawi.

Mauritius provides first information about tax evader

Yielding under pressure, Mauritius has for the first time provided banking information about a person being investigated by the Income Tax Department (ITD) for tax evasion and money laundering. They (Mauritius) have given information related to a person being probed by ITD who had remitted funds from that country to India, an official told PTI.

India to wait till Dec to get details from Swiss banks

India will have to wait till the end of this year to get information about funds stashed in banks in Switzerland where Parliament will take time to ratify the tax treaty signed between the two in August last year. India and Switzerland had signed an agreement on August 30, 2010 to amend the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with a view to facilitating exchange of information between the two countries.

Sources said a number of countries have refused to give information on the ground that tax evasion was not an offence under their law but if tax fraud was included, they would cooperate.
