The new Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) building in Nangal Raya, Delhi, was inaugurated last week by the Minister of State for Finance. The eco-friendly facility, designed with modern amenities, will serve as a hub for multiple departmental formations, enhancing accessibility for taxpayers. Additionally, the Parcel Management System (PMS) of Indian Railways has been integrated with the E-Way Bill (EWB) system, streamlining compliance by enabling direct transfer of data from the Railways to the EWB portal.

In enforcement actions, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted a successful operation in Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh, seizing 36.1 kg of dry and 76 kg of liquid Mephedrone, valued at ₹168.15 crore, from an illegal drug manufacturing facility. Four individuals, including the factory’s director, were arrested. In another operation, DRI intercepted two Indian nationals at Chandigarh airport attempting to smuggle ₹25 crore worth of foreign currency concealed in luggage. This highlights DRI’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal trade and currency smuggling.

Finally, Sh. Brij Bhushan Gupta, Pr. ADG, DGGI Delhi, was elected Chair of the World Customs Organization’s Working Group on Data and Statistics, recognizing India’s significant contributions over the past two years.

DO No. 42/News Letter/CH(IC)/2024 Dated: 14th October, 2024

Dear Colleague,

Last week, the new Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) building in Nangal Raya, located in the heart of the national capital, was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister of State for Finance. This state-of-the-art facility is equipped with modern amenities for both taxpayers and officers and has been thoughtfully designed as a green campus with a focus on sustainability. Significantly, this building will house several formations of the Department in the geographical proximity to the taxpayers. The Board recognizes and appreciates the dedicated efforts of all officers, both within and outside the Department, whose contributions have been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.

In a further step towards ensuring traceability and ease of compliance, the Parcel Management System (PMS) of Indian Railways has now been integrated with the E-Way Bill (EWB) system. This integration will facilitate the seamless transfer of RR No. /Parcel Way Bill (PWB) data from Railways to the e-way bill portal. The taxpayers may be advised to follow the guidelines issued by GSTN to avoid any potential discrepancies.

The DRI continues its strong crackdown on the illegal trade of narcotics and psychotropic substances. Acting on specific intelligence, DRI Mumbai and Indore, in close coordination, executed a successful operation at a factory located in the Industrial Area of Meghnagar, district Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh. The operation led to the bust of an illegal drug manufacturing facility producing Mephedrone, a psychotropic substance. A total of 36.1 kg of dry Mephedrone and 76 kg of liquid Mephedrone, with an estimated illicit market value of Z168.15 crore, were seized and four individuals, including the factory’s Director, were arrested for the illegal production and storage of Mephedrone. My appreciation for the team effort!

In yet another remarkable operation by the DRI, two Indian nationals scheduled to travel to Dubai were intercepted based on specific intelligence at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh. A thorough search of one of the passengers and his baggage led to the recovery of foreign currency in multiple denominations with a total value of 25.08 crore. The foreign currency was concealed within checked-in baggage. This coordinated action by the DRI’s Ludhiana Zonal Unit and Chandigarh Regional Unit underscores the organization’s continued vigilance in preventing illegal currency smuggling operations!

I am pleased to announce that Sh. Brij Bhushan Gupta, Pr. ADG, DGGI Delhi, has been elected as the Chair of the World Customs Organization’s (WCO) Working Group on Data and Statistics (WGDS). The Group has been constituted to address key issues related to statistics and data sharing and will play a pivotal role in shaping the future trajectory of the WCO Data Strategy. His election is an acknowledgement of India’s contributions as Vice Chair over the past two years.

Until next week!

Yours sincerely,

(Sanjay Kumar Agarwal)
