The CBDT deliberately differentiates how due dates are displayed in ITR forms and previews. For non-audit individual taxpayers, the 31 July due date is shown as “31 July (or extended)” in the static ITR Form because this deadline is frequently extended due to technical issues, professional representations, and practical hardships. Conversely, the 31 October due date for cases involving tax audits—such as audit firms and their partners—is shown as a fixed date in the form, without “or extended,” to maintain stability in the audit-related filings and validations like Form 3CA/3CB/3CD, PAN–Firm–Auditor mapping, and utility checks. The ITR preview generated by the offline utility, however, is dynamic: it automatically updates to show “or extended” if CBDT officially extends the due date. This design ensures accuracy without compromising system integrity, balancing flexibility for non-audit cases and reliability for audit-sensitive submissions.

The due date of 31 July (for non-audit individuals) is frequently extended almost every year due to:

  • technical issues,
  • representations by professional bodies,
  • practical hardships.

Because of these regular extensions, CBDT keeps the wording “or extended” directly in the static ITR Form itself.

Hence, for individuals:

ITR Form shows: 31 July (or extended)

2. 31 October due date is kept static in the ITR form

For cases involving tax audit, including:

  • firms subject to audit, and
  • partners of such firms,

The due date of 31 October is coded as a fixed date in the form design.

Why is it fixed?

Because audit-related filings involve:

  • Tax Audit Report (Form 3CA/3CB/3CD),
  • PAN–Firm–Auditor mapping,
  • Strict utility validations.

To avoid breaking these validations every time CBDT extends the due date, the ITR Form does not include “or extended” for 31 October.

Hence:

ITR Form shows only: 31 October

This is a deliberate design choice, not an error.

3. The ITR Preview generated from the utility is dynamic

While the ITR Form is static, the ITR Preview (the PDF generated from the offline utility) is dynamic.

The utility checks whether CBDT has extended the due date.
If yes, it automatically displays:

“31 October or extended”

Therefore:

  • ITR Form → shows original due date
  • ITR Preview → shows original date plus extended date

Summary

Situation How Date Appears Why
Non-audit individuals 31 July (or extended) in ITR Form Because extensions are common every year
Audit / Partner of audit firm 31 October (without “or extended”) in ITR Form Due date kept static for audit-related schema stability
ITR Preview (PDF) Shows “or extended” for both dates Utility adds dynamic extension info
