India has demonstrated its undeterred resolve as a nation with its recent anti-terrorism and border security operations eliminating well-known terrorist infrastructure of military significance. After the first strikes were executed, a statement of the intent was provided by India’s Defence Spokesperson who said that the operations were a focused, measured, and non-escalatory response aimed at dismantling terror networks while consciously avoiding Pakistani military installations. This statement highlights that India aimed to neutralize the source of terrorist threats pre-emptively by dismantling essential terrorist infrastructure and not challenging the sovereignty of Pakistan. This fundamental action indicated India’s evolving counter-terrorism strategy for the subcontinent. It signalled India’s resolve to protect its territorial integrity and act decisively against such threats without spiralling into a full-blown conflict, but with the firm caveat of a strong response to any Pakistani aggression. This calibrated approach achieved significant objectives:
- The first attack carried out by the Indian Air Force demonstrates our military strength. The successful execution of a brutal and impactful assault, despite Pakistan being aware of the upcoming action, highlights the superiority and effectiveness of our capabilities. It is said that this crucial initial action by-passed all the defence capabilities of Pakistan and neutralized hundreds of terrorists and targeted nine major terrorist locations, thereby inflicting serious damage on the enemy’s infrastructure. A number of dreaded and most wanted terrorists were neutralised in the attack.
- Additionally, actions taken on the 8th and 9th of May successfully thwarted Pakistan’s efforts to retaliate through drone and advanced missile incursions. The level of retaliative measures taken by India which included hitting the air defence radars, air bases of Pakistan and some very sensitive defence locations has demonstrated that India is indeed capable of dealing with any escalation to her borders and giving back a devastating reply.
- In addition to the successful offensive strikes, India’s strong defensive capabilities were clearly demonstrated during this period. Pakistan’s efforts to intrude within Indian territory vide their cheap drones were firmly countered. Our defence systems effectively secured our borders, safeguarding our civilian population and protecting essential military installations. The enemy attempted to assault with drones, advanced missiles, and even ballistic missiles; however, our robust defence infrastructure successfully defeated their intentions highlighting the robustness and readiness of our military.
- By carrying out these actions, a strong message was sent that ongoing state-sponsored terrorism would be countered with all of India’s might redefining the level of tolerance India bears towards such acts. Deep within Pakistan, where we had conducted successful attacks, exemplified strategic reach throughout the country of Pakistan along with the capability of annihilating enemy assets at will. This also helped to reveal the considerable weaknesses in their defence systems, reinforcing our strategic advantage.
- In addition to the immediate tactical gains provided by these strikes, they served crucial strategic purposes. They communicated to the world that India is resolute in defending its sovereignty and that it maintains a firm stance against cross-border terrorism. Our defence capabilities underscored our power, again establishing India’s position as a world military leader.
- The global community has become increasingly cognizant of Pakistan’s function as a secure cosy abode for terrorism and of India’s steadfast strategy in addressing this threat. One should bear in mind that the present ceasefire, while halting the military operations, does not signify a return to normalcy. Essential diplomatic measures, such as withdrawal from the Indus Waters Treaty, Visa and Trade Restrictions, and Airspace Limitations, are still in effect, already placing considerable pressure on the Pakistani economy. Even the long-term repercussions of withdrawing from the Indus Treaty pose a formidable challenge economically and even socially for Pakistan.
- During the military press conferences, India projected women officers in prominent positions. This has strongly emphasized the level of women empowerment in the country and in its armed forces.
- Throughout the military exercise, the Citizens of India made a remarkable display of unity and national integrity across social, religious and political spectrum with each and every person standing beside the Army and the Government and leaving beside all their issues and disagreements. This made the world witness the perfect example of Unity in Diversity in the country while our adversary was busy in dealing with internal fights and attacks from within their own country.
In light of the above, it is to be understood that the ceasefire was a logical and strategic decision rooted in India’s larger national interests. The need for a ceasefire can be highlighted by the following points:
- First of all, India has a strong and quickly developing economy and is the fourth largest in the world, with a nominal GDP of more than $4 trillion and huge foreign exchange reserves. This situation sharply contrasts with Pakistan’s poor economic condition. This economic growth would definitely be affected if the conflict is dragged for a longer period even when our main aim of censuring the enemy has been accomplished. In contrast, Pakistan, which is facing severe economic difficulties, has almost nothing to lose in a long-drawn conflict.
- Secondly, although India has the capability and means to cause great destruction to the enemy, a long-drawn conflict would unavoidably result in losses for us as well, adversely affecting our world class infrastructure and the unavoidable loss of invaluable lives of our military personnel and civilians. The toll of such a war on human lives, especially for families of our army men and those living in border regions, is a burden that requires careful consideration.
- Thirdly, the attack on 7th May successfully damaged the terrorist infrastructure that was meant to be targeted. Extending the conflict could have led to mirroring of the Russia-Ukraine war. Even a superpower such as Russia has encountered considerable economic pressure and casualties, whereas Ukraine has experienced catastrophic losses. India should not become another Russia. India made a prudent decision to come out clean of any such situation that could hinder our economic advancement, especially complicating matters for our Northern and Western States.
- Fourthly, some external actors have kept the situation under their deep vigil to exploit such regional instability to their advantage. The initial backing from China towards Pakistan after the ceasefire announcement indicates a possible unease with de-escalation. This discomfort could stem from the economic and strategic advantages that may have arisen from an extended war imposed in India, which could bar the movement of industries into India from China post US Tariff Regime.
- Ultimately, it was at Pakistan’s request that a ceasefire was accepted when their Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart. To accept this request while upholding our terms and conditions demonstrates India’s strong position and strategic control over the situation.
To sum up, the Indo-Pak ceasefire should not be viewed as a sign of weakness; rather, it is a deliberate strategic pause. It enables India to consolidate its achievements, uphold pressure through non-military methods, and protect its economic goals after having given a significant blow to terrorist infrastructure and sending a clear message to Pakistan. India has successfully redefined the rules of engagement in the fight against terrorism, showcasing its strength and strategic foresight by prioritizing long-term national interests. It is very apparent that from now on Pakistan will think more than twice before allowing or planning any terrorist attacks on our country and understanding that the next blow might be a bigger one which they may not be able to resist.
