The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has revised its internal audit standards to strengthen internal audit practices in the country. The current revision, approved by the ICAI council last week, addresses issues such as effects of laws and regulations in conducting internal audit, responsibility of management for compliance with laws and regulations, responsibility of internal auditor and internal audit procedures.

Auditors Nayak and Kishnadwala, who are doing special audit for telecom major Bharti Airtel, have sought extension from the government by one-and- a-half months to submit the report. In April, DoT had ordered a special audit on five telecom companies — Bharti Airtel, Vodafone-Essar, Tata Teleservices, Idea Cellular and Reliance Communication — to check alleged mis-reporting of revenue to evade taxes and licence fee.

Indian demand for steel consumption is increasing in the coming days. We get proof of the putting when we analyzed and found that steel players like JSW Steel and Essar Steel are increasing their focus on opening up more retail outlets pan India with growth in domestic demand. JSW Steel currently has 50 such steel retail outlets called JSW Shoppe and is targeting to increase it to 200 by March 2010. They expect at least 10-15%of their total production to be sold by their retail outlets. Huge flow of investments will happen in the coming days in the steel sector due to increasing trend of domestic consumption.

But the year end’s breaking news, the Bombay High Court judgement in the Lawyers’ Collective case threatens to be a showstopper. The Court decision dwells on fundamental issues impacting our turf, whether foreign law firms can carry on non-litigious activity in India, the regulation of the legal profession, and in a macro-perspective, the judicial interpretation of restrictions in establishing liaison offices in India.

Comprehensive insurance policy for vehicles covers pillion rider: Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court has ruled that a comprehensive insurance policy for vehicles also covers the pillion rider on a two-wheeler and passengers in a car. Following the ruling, all 17 insurance companies providing insurance to two-wheelers and four-wheelers have also agreed to implement it earnestly and immediately.

Department of posts to distribute new pension system

The Department of Posts, Government of India, has been enlisted as a Point of Presence (PoP) for distribution of the New Pension System (NPS) by Pension Fund Regulatory & Development Authority (PFRDA). The Department of Posts (DOP) would, to start with, make the NPS available at over 800 of its branches all over the country, and expand the distribution network to more branches in a phased manner in its endeavour to make NPS available to all citizens in all parts of the country.
