Feeling Stressed, Anxious or Overworked Within Your Workspace? If So, Fitness is Your Answer!

Did you know that only one in three adults achieve the recommended amount of physical activity each week, and more than 80% of adults do not meet the recommended guidelines for both aerobic or muscle-strengthening activities?

Within our daily lives which include those long painful, busy work days, that seem like they will never end, the last thing you want to do when leaving the office, is think about exercising or participating within active sport. Sitting on the couch while watching the television or reading a book is always much more favourable!

Unfortunately, the way in which our bodies were designed, is to move around and not to sit all day. Office employees who lead an active lifestyle are shown to be much more productive. This is because exercise increases the blood flow to the brain, meaning you will get a new boost of energy and alertness. This will also sharpen your concentration and decision-making skills, along with a more stabilised mental well-being.

Sitting for long periods of time is now known as “The New Smoking”, as sitting has been associated with many health risks similar to that of which smoking can cause. Physical inactivity contributes to over 3 million preventable deaths alone every year, that’s 6% of all deaths! Some of the health risks associated with long durations of sitting are;

  • Muscle Deterioration
  • Slower Metabolism
  • Weight Gain
  • Incorrect Posture
  • Back Problems
  • Increased Anxiety and Paranoia
  • Degeneration of Brain Functions
  • Increased Risk of Heart Disease
  • Higher Risk of Diabetes

This is just to list a few!

So, what can we do about it?….

After work I am going to go for a run

Studies have shown that just 30 minutes of exercise a day, can completely change your life. Your physical, mental and overall well-being can be completely re-structured, just from giving 30 minutes out of your busy schedule.

When you are sat at your desk, completing the tax returns or running through accounts. It is easy to say “I’m going to start the gym this week” or “After work I’m going to go for a run”, but in actual fact, when push comes to shove and your perception becomes your reality, not many people want to take on these active exercises due to it being “too hard” for them. Also the other excuse that we commonly tell ourselves is, “There is not enough hours in the day”.

This is where finding your own ways of exercising come in, as if you go and play a game of tennis with your friends, or go for a nice run down by the river, suddenly you realise that exercise has not got to be a chore, it can also be fun!

All of the health risks that we have mentioned above, which are associated with sitting down for long periods of time, can all be completely reversed and made into positive benefits to help rejuvenate you, your body and your mind!

Happy

Taking that little piece of time out of your busy schedule and making sure that you are up and active can simply change your life!
