RBI hikes statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) by 1%, leaves key rates unchanged

A hawkish Reserve Bank of India (RBI), while staying away from hiking key rates like repo or reverse repo, hiked the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) to 25% from 24%. The cash reserve ratio (CRR), the minimum amount banks need to park with the RBI, was also left unchanged.

The government has sought clarity from auditing firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) about their operations and business plans in India. “Come back with a plan. What is that you are responsible for? What is that you should be responsible for?” Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told PTI while replying to questions about his meeting with senior representatives of PWC early this week. PWC has been in the news for the wrong reasons as its auditors were involved in auditing the books of accounts of fraud-stricken Satyam Computer Services.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes had issued Circular No. 23 (hereinafter called “the Circular”) on 23rd July 1969 regarding taxability of income accruing or arising through, or from, business connection in India to a non-resident, under section 9 of the Income-tax Act, 1961. 2. It is noticed that interpretation of the Circular by some of the taxpayers to claim relief is not in accordance with the provisions of section 9 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 or the intention behind the issuance of the Circular.
