How Apple’s and Microsoft’s are setting shoe standards high for our chicken legs to fill in the carbon footprint reduction march

As the planet heats up faster than a Garam Samosa, it’s time for us surgically break open the thingy that’s trapping the heat and reduce our carbon footprint. Thankfully, we have the tech giants to show us how to. One company that has been recently all over the news for taking a bold step towards this goal is Apple, which has committed to becoming 100% carbon neutral for its supply chain and products by 2030. As part of this commitment, Apple has opened its first retail store in India, located in Mumbai’s BKC Kurla Complex, which is designed to be one of the most energy-efficient Apple store locations in the world. I’m sure the awkwardly cheering ‘green’ t-shirts is all you remember when the topic of new Apple store in Mumbai pops up. This is a significant milestone for both Apple and the sustainable business movement as a whole.

Apple’s store features a dedicated solar array and operates without any reliance on fossil fuels, making it one of the most energy-efficient Apple store locations in the world. This is an impressive feat, and it sets an example for other companies to follow.

Carbon neutrality is a term that has gained increasing attention in recent years, and for good reason. Essentially, carbon neutrality means achieving net-zero carbon emissions by balancing the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere with the amount removed. This can be accomplished through a combination of reducing emissions and offsetting the remaining emissions through things like renewable energy projects or reforestation.

Of course, Apple is not the only company that is working towards carbon neutrality. Many other businesses, both large and small, are also taking action to reduce their carbon footprint. For example, Google has been carbon neutral since 2007 and plans to become carbon-free by 2030. Microsoft has also committed to becoming carbon negative by 2030, which means removing more carbon from the atmosphere than it emits. For reducing carbon emissions on such massive unimaginable scales, I would like to honour these companies by the title – Frost Giants, where in my dystopian world, these Frost Giants are the real Avengers!

These commitments are significant because they demonstrate a shift in thinking among businesses towards a more sustainable future. Companies are recognizing that taking action on climate change is not only the right thing to do, but with all the huzz and buzz it also makes good business sense. Consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the products they buy, and they are willing to pay more for products that are made sustainably.

But achieving carbon neutrality is not easy. It requires commitment, consistency and significant investment in renewable energy and other carbon reduction measures. By reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to a more sustainable energy system, we can not only mitigate the impacts of climate change but also create new jobs and economic opportunities in the renewable energy sector.

If you want to join the Frost Giants of my world in their march to make our planet more sustainable, begin with these simple steps:

1. Reduce energy consumption: One of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint is by reducing energy consumption. Turn off lights and electronics when not in use, use energy-efficient appliances, and install programmable thermostats to regulate heating and cooling. It’s really that simple for one organisation, but when compounded to millions of organisations, you start seeing magic!

2. Use renewable energy: Another way to reduce your carbon footprint is by using renewable energy. You can install solar panels on your home or business, or purchase renewable energy credits to offset carbon emissions.

3. Conserve water: Water is a precious resource, and conserving it can also help reduce your carbon footprint. Fix leaks, install low-flow toilets and showerheads, and install rainwater harvesting systems.

4. Reduce waste: Single-use plastics and excessive packaging contribute to waste and carbon emissions. Use reusable bags, containers, and water bottles, recycle and compost, and avoid single-use plastics. On a side note, drinking water from plastic bottles is harmful, as they release toxins that can cause various ailments.

5. Use sustainable transportation: Transportation is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions. By walking, biking, or using public transportation whenever possible, and choosing fuel-efficient vehicles when driving, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint.

6. Buy sustainable products: Look for products made from sustainable materials, with minimal packaging and a low carbon footprint. By supporting sustainable products, you can encourage more companies to adopt sustainable practices.

7. Promote sustainability in the workplace: Encourage your employees to reduce their carbon footprint by implementing telecommuting and video conferencing, and participating in carbon offset programs. By promoting sustainability in the workplace, you can help reduce your company’s overall carbon footprint.

With that said, I would like to leave you all with a quote by John Madison:

We do not inherit earth from our Fathers, we borrow it from our Children!
