The 2020 lockdown was the greatest teacher in our lives. That time gave us the opportunity to explore more and more about our day to day lives, relationships, goals and aspirations.

You might have observed that during lockdown, we suddenly got surrounded by ‘n’ number of learning platforms that were giving free certifications and I’m sure each one of us must had earned one certificate at least by attending any of the online sessions.

At that time, I was preparing for my CA Final Group II examination and despite that, I too tried to achieve those certificates and successfully earned 5-7 at that time.

But after qualifying the exams, When I was preparing my Curriculum Vitae (CV) for getting a good job, believe me, I couldn’t gather even 1% of my courage to mention about those certifications in that prestigious document because I realised, although I had attended multiple sessions but my knowledge was not up to mark and finally I didn’t mention about the single certificate that I achieved during lockdown. The single reason behind that strange feeling was my greed to collect certificates when I should have hunger to collect knowledge.

Learning Skills Wait...Choosing A Right Time Is More Important

Now, here comes the main topic…..Timing.

Timing is the most important thing that decides whether we are fit for the particular skill at that moment or not. I personally believe, Certificates motivate us but on the other side, there is a strong need to think that for the sake of collection of certificates, aren’t we fooling ourselves?

Let me give you an another example of perfect timing:

During my CA Inter (IPCC) preparations, I used to hate income tax subject a lot. It was next to hell for me but when I joined articleship, I myself don’t remember, how and when Tax became the love of my life and eventually I authored multiple books and articles on this subject. Just because that time was perfect for learning those skills as I was practicing Tax everyday in the real/practical world.

So, the main point is: Keep learning everyday but only those skills which are relevant for you at that moment of time. Don’t just leave yourself open in the digital space to catch everything that passes by you.

For example: You can learn how to operate a particular machine but you will forget it soon if you couldn’t practice it frequently.

I have seen people (specifically students) who are very eager to learn everything that can earn them a reputed certificate but everything is not relevant my friend. Wait for the right time.

If you are a student, learn the skills that can increase your retention power more and the skills that can help you in relating your books with the practical world.

If you are a professional, learn the skills that can help you to breathe normal when surrounded by experts. That normal breath is the real confidence which is the result of right skill set.

I hope I could make my point.

Thank You.
