CA Bhumika Maheshwari
The day you begin your articleship is the day you truly step into the professional world. Till now, CA has been about exams, classes, and theory — but the moment you walk into your firm on Day 1, you’ll realise this is where real learning begins.
These years are not just a mandatory step, they’re the foundation of your career as a Chartered Accountant. It’s the first time you’ll sit in client offices, attend boardroom discussions, or even visit factory units and see how businesses actually run. It’s also when you stop being just a student and start being shaped into a professional.
And the firm you choose will decide whether you spend your days only preparing working papers, or whether you actually learn to think like a Chartered Accountant.
The Crossroad: Big 4 or Non-Big 4?
This is the first major career decision every CA student faces — Should I join a Big 4 or a large/mid-sized firm?
- Big 4 Firms:
Here, you get exposure to the world’s largest companies, global best practices, and structured training. You may even find yourself working in plush offices and interacting with international clients. But the flip side is, you might be one of hundreds of articled assistants, working in a narrow niche, with less personal mentoring. - Large / Mid-Sized Firms:
These firms may not have the global name, but they often give you something equally valuable (sometimes even better) — direct client interaction, partner-level attention, and hands-on experience across multiple areas like Forensic Investigations, Valuations, Due Diligence, Debt Advisory, audit, taxation, advisory, and compliance. You may visit factory units, prepare full sets of financials, or even sit across the table with promoters and CFOs. “Working with MSMEs and small promoters gives you a real sense of impact and value. With growing policy push from the PMO, many of these firms are on track to become India’s own home-grown multinationals — and you may not want to miss being part of that journey.”
What Really Matters
At this stage, the brand name matters less than the experience. What will shape your career is:
- The variety of assignments that help you build a strong foundation
- How much client-facing exposure you get.
- How often you step out of the office to visit sites and factories.
- Whether seniors and partners take time to mentor you personally.
In the end, remember: a CA’s skill is built on exposure and responsibility, not just logos on your resume.

Accountant job
I did the mistake of joining one of these firms after getting 70% in B. Sc (Biochemistry). I was so pissed off for two years of my Article ship way back in 1984. only 3rd year i could get into momentum. by that time it was all over ! Well today I am FCA practicing and gave a couple of boys and girls Articleship as well . 50% are still in touch me even after they becoming CA. Nobody chose Practice as such !
