E-filing of Income Tax Return (ITR) is mandatory for most of the Tax Payers in India. Income Tax return can be e-filed on website of Income Tax Department https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/. Tax Payer has to register on the e-filing portal & from registered account use services available for Taxpayers like filing of return, response to e-notices, e-assessment, raise grievance, view Form 26AS & track income tax refund status etc. In case Taxpayer forgets E-filing Portal Password, the same can be reset using ‘Forgot Password > Reset’ option available at portal. Following six alternatives are available for resetting Password:-

1. Reset Income Tax E-filing portal password Using Aadhar OTP

Under this option, OTP is sent in the mobile number registered with Aadhar Database (UIDAI).

In case that mobile number is no longer in use, the same can be updated by visiting Aadhar Enrolment Centre. List of Aadhar Enrolment Centre is available at https://uidai.gov.in/

2. Reset Income Tax E-filing portal password by Uploading Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

User can select any one of the two options provided:

1. New DSC (Digital Signature is not registered on E-filing Portal)

2. Registered DSC (Digital Signature is already registered on E-filing Portal)

DSC Signature file can be generated through DSC Management Utility available on E-Filing Portal. DSC can be procured from Vendors of Certifying Authority (CA)

3. Reset Income Tax E-filing portal password  by Answering Secret Question

In case user remembers ‘Answer of Secret Questions’ kept at the time of registering on E-filing Portal, the same can be used for resetting password. These questions can be updated after login into E-filing Portal.

4. Reset Income Tax E-filing portal password  Using E-Filing OTP

Taxpayer can also reset password using OTP to be sent on Email ID & Mobile Number registered on E-filing portal. In case that email ID and/or mobile number is no longer in use, password can’t be re-set using this option.

Mobile Number and/or email ID can be updated on E-Filing Portal only after login into registered account. Always keep the same updated to receive regular updates regarding your income tax return from Tax Department.

5. Reset Income Tax E-filing portal password Using Login through Internet Banking

Taxpayer can also login to Income Tax E-filing Portal through Net Banking. List of Banks providing the e-filing login facility is available on the website of Income Tax Department. In the Internet banking, search for the option like Tax Services, E-filing Login & Income Tax Login etc. New Password can be kept once taxpayer login into the e-filing Portal.

 This option can be used only if Taxpayer has Internet Banking of the Bank account & PAN card is duly updated in the Bank records. User can update PAN card, mobile number & email ID by placing request at the bank.

6. Reset Income Tax E-filing portal password by Placing request through Email to E-filing Helpdesk

In case taxpayer is unable to reset password using above available options, then user may opt to last resort for resetting password i.e. by sending email to E-filing Helpdesk efilinghelpdesk@incometax.gov.in along with following documents:-

√ Scanned copy of PAN of the taxpayer

√  Scanned PDF copy of the identity proof (such as passport /Voter Identity card/Driving License /Aadhaar card / Bank passbook with Photo)

√  Scanned PDF copy of Address proof (such as passport /Voter Identity card/Driving License /Aadhaar card / Bank passbook with Photo)

√  Signed Letter requesting to reset the password by giving the reasons

Note 1: Kindly attach the documents in ZIP (.zip) format only; otherwise your request will not be processed.

Note 2: All the documents to be self-attested by the taxpayer.

Note 3: The request for password reset have to originate from the email id of the personal email id of the Pan holder as registered in the e-filing profile or another Email ID of Taxpayer only.

Once the documents are validated, the reset password will be shared through Email id from which request has been received.

Thus, taxpayer can login to e-filing portal with password received in the email & update latest email ID & mobile number on the e-filing portal.
