The All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP), one of the largest professional organizations of tax practitioners in India, has submitted a request for a one-month extension on the submission of tax returns due for the Assessment Year (AY) 2023-24.
This plea comes in light of severe flooding in various parts of the country, and late updates of AIS and 26AS data on the tax portal. AIFTP believes these challenges have hindered tax professionals and taxpayers from meeting the initial deadline of July 31, 2023. The federation, which boasts over 11,000 members across India, advocates for an extension until August 31, 2023 to alleviate the burden on taxpayers and avoid the imposition of late fees that may occur due to circumstances beyond their control.
Conclusion: Given the prevalent natural calamities and late data updates, AIFTP’s request for an extension on tax return due dates seems justified. The resolution to this request remains at the discretion of the Union Finance Minister, Hon’ble Nirmala Sitharaman. The outcome will be a measure of the government’s adaptability to unforeseen circumstances that affect the financial obligations of its citizens.
