Dear Colleague,
I am sure the Departmental officers would have keenly watched the Hon’ble Finance Minister’s Budget Speech on the 01st of February. The compelling and inspiring speech ignited a sense of collective responsibility and determination. The Hon’ble Minister mentioned the positive results of recent surveys conducted by a leading consulting firm – 94 per cent of industry leaders view the transition to GST as largely positive and 80 per cent of the respondents feel that it has led to supply chain optimisation, as elimination of tax arbitrage and octroi has resulted in disbanding of check posts at State and city boundaries.
The positive sentiment, coupled with the facts that the tax base of GST has more than doubled and the average monthly gross GST collection has almost doubled to ₹ 1.66 lakh crore this year, give us confidence that the GST ecosystem has been complementing the growth in economy. On the Customs side, the initiatives taken in the recent past to facilitate International trade found mention, due to which the import release time declined by 47 per cent to 71 hours at Inland Container Depots, by 28 per cent to 44 hours at air cargo complexes and by 27 per cent to 85 hours at sea ports, over the last four years.
I congratulate the Budget teams of the Tax Research Unit and the GST Policy Wing, who worked hard to prepare the items pertaining to CBIC in the Interim Budget!
On the enforcement front, the officers of DRI Kolkata Zonal Unit, on the basis of specific information regarding landing of a huge quantity of Betel Nuts at a remote island in the Sundarbans Delta, intercepted 2 trawlers at Gosaba with the assistance of the Border Security Force, which had arrived from across the border. On rummaging, 70.32 MT of Betel Nuts in 1,152 sacks were found to be loaded on these Trawlers. 27 persons were arrested during the course of this operation, all of whom were ascertained to be members of a major smuggling syndicate that had been engaged in the smuggling of Betel Nuts. My appreciation to the team of officers involved in this operation.
Another notable case was booked last week by officers of Delhi Customs at IGI Airport leading to arrest of one passenger who was attempting to clear cocaine weighing 5.88 Kg and valued at Rs. 82.448 Crore by concealing in her bags. Kudos to the team!
As I close, I would like to extend my heartfelt best wishes to Shri Satyendra Kumar Singh and Shri Ashutosh Awasthi on their superannuation, and wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Wishing you not only contentment but also good health and boundless enjoyment in this new chapter of your life.
Till next week!
Yours sincerely,
(Sanjay Kumar Agarwal)
