The Ministry of Finance, under Notification No. 47/2024-Customs dated November 13, 2024, has amended the existing customs duty exemption framework outlined in Notification No. 50/2017-Customs. Under this amendment, Condition No. 48 now includes provisions for direct supplies to the armed forces of the Union under the Ministry of Defence and to government departments. This change, effective November 14, 2024, enables eligible entities to directly procure goods duty-free, as per public interest considerations established under Section 25 of the Customs Act, 1962, and Section 3 of the Customs Tariff Act, 1975. This revision expands on the previous provisions that required such transactions to go through certain government channels, facilitating streamlined duty-free imports for defense and governmental use.
