The provisional figures of Direct Tax collections up to October, 2017 show that net collections are at Rs. 4.39 lakh crore which is 15.2% higher than the net collections for the corresponding period of last year.
The provisional figures of Direct Tax collections up to September, 2017 show that net collections are at Rs. 3.86 lakh crore which is 15.8% higher than the net collections for the corresponding period of last year. Net Direct Tax collections represent 39.4% of the total Budget Estimates of Direct Taxes for F.Y. 2017-18 (Rs. 9.8 lakh crore).
This additional reporting requirement not only places the additional compliance burden on the taxpayers but also calls for the broader tax management on part of taxpayers to avoid tax litigations originating from wide variances between “estimated income” reported in the intimation and “actual income” reported in the Income Tax Return at end of the year.
On review of the progress of TDS collections it is noted that as on 31.08.2017, an amount of Rs. 1,65,114 crore has been collected under TDS (Minor Head) at a growth rate of 10.44% over corresponding period of last financial year. It has shown a significant decline of 7 percent over the last financial year when the growth rate at this time was 17.44%.
The Direct Tax collections up to August, 2017 in the current Financial Year 2017-18 continue to register a steady growth. Direct Tax collections, net of refunds, stands at Rs. 2.24 lakh crore which is 17.5% higher than the net collections for the corresponding period of the last year. This collection is 22.9% of the total Budget Estimates of Direct Taxes for the Financial Year 2017-18.
The Government launched a concerted drive against black money with Demonetization being an important step in that direction. The provisional figures for revenue collections up to March, 2017 show a gross Direct Tax collection of Rs. 10.09 lakh crore. The net collection after issue of refunds stands at Rs. 8.47 lakh crore which is 14.2% higher than the net collection for the corresponding period last year.
