“Learn how to apply online for a higher pension under EPS 95 following EPFO’s latest guidelines from the 20.02.2023 circular. Step-by-step guide for eligible EPF members.”

1. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) vide circular dated 20.02.2023 has laid down the detailed guidelines on the eligibility of employees for higher pensions, the documents required, and the application process.

1.1 The circular is issued to comply with the Supreme Court’s direction on higher pensions for eligible employees.

1.2 As per the circular, only those employees who were members of the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) before 01.09.2014 and continued to be a member on or after 01.09.2014 and did not opt for higher pension under the EPS 95 scheme are eligible to submit an application for higher pension.

1.3 Earlier on 29.12.2022, the EPFO issued a circular on the same line where a specific category of employees was eligible to submit the application. The manner in which employee would apply for higher pension, prescribed vide circular dated 20.02.2023 are the same as it was in the earlier circular dated 29.12.2022

2. In this article, an attempt has been made to explain step by step procedure to submit the online application for a higher pension. (as it is being used for the eligible employees specified vide circular dated 22.12.2022.

3. Step by Step Procedure to Submit the online application for higher pension

a. Google – EPFO Member interface

b. Click on https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/

c. Click on the flash “Pension on higher salary – Online application of joint option”

d. Click on: Application Form for validation of the joint option:

e. Click on “Validation of joint option for the employees who were members before 01.09.2014 and continued to be a member on or after 01.09.2014

f. Enter the details: -PPO No. (if applicable), Name, Date of Birth, Aadhar No., Aadhar linked Mobile Number, Captcha & tick on the declaration box. Get OTP.

g. The Application Form will be displayed:

h. Click on Disclaimer: – I have gone through Supreme Court Judgment dated 04.11.2022 and I am registering the application in terms of the directions contained in the said judgment. I undertake that the pension will be calculated subject to a formula determined under the scheme.

i. Provide member’s detail such as mobile number, and e-mail, and attach the Joint Option Form. & undertaking by the trust (in case of exempted establishment)

j. Provide the contribution Details:

(i) Whether the member wants to use accumulation available in his /her PF account for payment of due contribution for this option

(ii) Whether the member is giving the undertaking to deposit the contribution along with interest due till the date of payment through his last employer (only when the PF account has insufficient balance)

(iii) Attach other documentary evidence as per Para 6(vii) of the circular dated 20.03.2022 i.e. Proof of remittance of employer’s share in PF on higher wages etc.

4. Manner in which Joint Application Form will be dealt with the Regional PF Commissioner: Para 7 of the circular dated 20.02.2023 prescribed the following manner in which joint Application Form will be dealt with the RPFC (Regional Provident Fund Commissioner.

4.1 Each application will be registered and will be digitally logged and the receipt number will be provided.

4.2 The employer will be provided separate login credentials and all the employees’ applications will land into the employer’s login.

4.3 Employer’s verification with a digital signature will be essential for further processing.

4.4 Post examination of the application by the pension Authorities, the decision shall be intimated to the employee thru email/post and SMS.

5. The circular and guidelines by EPFO indicating the methodology of the differential amount and computation of pension are awaited.

    I applied for Higher Pension by ‘ON LINE’ through your portal on 09.03.2023 Due to conform in understanding the meaning (Between EPF and EPS). In column No 10 I was select option as ‘NO’ instead of ‘YES’. My employer was contributed 12% on my actual salary exceeding statuary ceiling of Rs 5000/- in EPF. On column No: 11 also I select option ‘NO’ instead of ‘YES’ as the above same reason. How to modify and uploading the documents

      Please refer article dated 25.04.2023.

      Your employer can reject the application and EPFO will give you one month time to resubmit/ correct the application through the employer.

      If no action will be taken by you within one month , automatically , your application will get rejected/ withdrawn

      You cannot revise the application .
      However , there is a procedure to get it revised through employer .
      Your employer will reject the application . It will still go to EPFO.

      One month time will be provided to the employer ( under intimation to the employee ) to revise/ complete the employee’s application.

    I HAVE SUBMIT JOINT OPTION FOR HIGHER EPS95 PENSION. BUT I HAVE FILLED JOINING AND EXIT SAME DATE I.E.16.11.95. HOWEVER EXIT DATE IS NOV 22. NOW JOINT OPTION IS PENDING WITH EMPLOYER. CAN IT EMPLOYER CORRECT EXIT DATE NOW.

      The employer cannot correct . He can either reject or approve the application.

      However, the EPFO , on finding error will inform employer & employee and one month time will be given to the employee to correct the mistake and resubmit the application thru employer.

    I HAVE SUBMITTED MY APPLICATION AND GOT MY APPLICATION NO. MY APPLICATION STATUS IS SHOWING MY CURRENT EMPLOYER NAME AND 2 OF MY PREVIOUS EMPLOYER NAMES. I HAVE TRANSFERRED ALL PREVIOUS EPF BALANCE TO MY CURRENT PF NO WITH CURRENT EMPLOYER. SO PLS INFORM ME WHETHER ALL THE 3 EMPLOYERS NEED TO APPROVE MY APPLICATION FOR HIGHER PENSION OPTION OR ONLY MY CURRENT EMPLOYER?

      To the best of my limited understanding , the last employer need to approve the application.

      Even if , it is required to be approved by all the employer ,nothing can be done at your end. Automatically , the application will flow in the respective employer’s login .

      They can approve / reject the application and , in case of approval , need to upload the details on the portal.

      Click yes on 1st option , only if you join before 01 June 2001
      & in case of 2nd option , Click yes , if you exit on or before 1st June 2001.

      This feature is available on the portal itself.

      When you login to the portal , the status of application with the small arrow ( downwards) will be seen.
      Click on the arrow & download the form submitted by you.

    mam, am a post 2014 retiree will the 26 (6) format from internet duly signed by us and employer will will be accepted by epfo? or is it necessary to submit one before retirement? because in our company none filed 26 (6) before .

      Form 26(6) is to be submitted now itself ( not at the time of retirement).

      Though , now the portal is not indicating it as a mandatory requirement . It is better to upload Form 26(6) duly certified by the employer

    mam, thanks a lot for your advice, I am confused here because my father took voluntary retirement in 1993, you said he is eligible for eps 95, I have read lots of queries where you have said that who have retired before September 2014 is not eligible for pension. please clarify. your clarification will be appreciated.

      In case , the employee took VRS before Sep 2014 but his due date of retirement ( the date he attained age of 58) was after Sep 2014 – he is eligible for higher pension .

      If you exit from EPF & EPS scheme before Sep 2014 , you are not eligible for higher pension.

      The employees who joined after Sep 2014 & salary is more than Rs 15000/- are not eligible to become member of EPS
