The government has increased the existing limit of the Employees Deposit Linked Insurance amount from Rs 60,000 to Rs 1,00,000. The amount will be paid to the next of kin of an employee in case of his death. In a notification issued on June 18, the government in the newly modifed Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (Amendment) Scheme, 2010, said the benefits will be for employees of both the public and private sector.

Income Tax (I-T) officials search offices of Gammon India Limited

Income Tax (I-T) officials today carried out search operations at the offices of infrastructure major Gammon India in four cities. A company spokesperson told PTI that some officials had visited the premises but “we do not know what is happening”According to sources, I-T officials have been carrying out the search in four offices of the company in Delhi, Mumbai, Nagpur and Vadodara. “The search started in the morning and is going on,” a source said.

Service tax Penalty – Section 80 does not provide for reducing the penalty under Section 76 below the prescribed minimum

A plain reading of Section 76 of the Act indicates that a person who is liable to pay service tax and who has failed to pay such tax is under an obligation to pay, in addition to the tax so payable and interest on such tax, a penalty for such failure. The quantum of penalty has been specified in the provision by laying down the minimum and the maximum limits with a further cap in so far as the maximum limit is concerned.
