Chances of a speedy resolution to l’affaire Satyam receded on Wednesday with the Andhra Pradesh high court granting bail to the company’s founder and former chairman, B. Ramalinga Raju, freeing, albeit temporarily, the last of the accused in a corporate fraud that came to light in early 2009 with Raju’s confession and whose magnitude has since doubled to a claimed `14,000 crore.
The ICAI has argued that the bulk of the management accounting work is done by the chartered accountants, so addition of the word ‘Management’ to the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, or ICWAI, is misleading and should not be allowed.
Even as the Andhra Pradesh high court granted bail to B Ramalinga Raju, the prime accused in the Satyam Computers multi-billion-rupee scam, on Wednesday, citing his ill health as one of the reasons, doctors at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad said that there was a significant improvement in his Hepatitis B condition.
Accounting profession watchdog Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will seek an amendment to the Chartered Accountants Act to expand its regulatory powers to cover audit firms. Currently, the institute has powers to regulate only its members — chartered accountants — but does not have a specific mandate under law to oversee audit firms operating in the country.
Attention of the members is invited to the announcement regarding requirement relating to mentioning the firm registration number in the audit reports and resolution passed by the company for appointment of statutory auditors, published on page 1312 of the February 2010 issue of the Journal.
The Supreme Court of New York has asked Upaid Systems Ltd to cooperate with IDBI Bank, the Escrow Agent, and allow it to withhold any applicable taxes from the $70-million settlement amount. This might result in savings of taxes for the scam-hit company.

Expressing satisfaction over the Bombay High Court order, ICAI today said Sebi is the right authority to probe allegations of irregularities against audit firm Price Waterhouse in the multi-crore Satyam scam.
The Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed the writ petition filed by Price Waterhouse challenging the jurisdiction of the Securities and Exchange Board to investigate the audit firm’s role in the multi-crore Satyam accounting fraud. Delivering the order, the Division Bench headed by Mr Justice P. B. Majmudar said, “It is not a situation where we can say that SEBI cannot proceed with its investigations.”
