The CBI, probing the multi-crore accounting scam in Satyam Computers, has reduced the number of witnesses in the case to 220 as against 690 mentioned in the charge sheet, following directions from the Supreme Court to speed up the trial, a top official said. Lakshmi Narayana, DIG, CBI said as per the apex court directives, the number of documents supporting the charge sheet, which were around 3,067, have also been reduced to a thousand-odd.
The Indian Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has relaxed the norms for students aspiring to become chartered accountants. Until now an aspirant had to clear common proficiency test for chartered accountancy (CPT) after Std XII or graduation. Now there is an option of becoming a CA without clearing CPT. The existing option will continue to be available.

Taking a strong note of State Bank of India’s huge profit erosion for March quarter due to higher provisions, accounting regulator ICAI on Friday said it would send a letter asking the country’s largest lender to explain the reasons for higher provisions for bad loans.
The Quality Review Board of the Institute, in its meeting held on 4th June 2011, has approved the release of Exposure Draft of Guidance Manual for Audit Quality. The proposed manual may be modified in light of comments / suggestions received.
Pursuant to Hon’ble Court’s orders dated the 19.04.2011, Official Liquidator attached to the High Court of Delhi, invite bio data/Applications from qualified and desirous Chartered Accountants, who arc enrolled as Members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and in active practice for at least 03 years and are interested to be empanelled for the Official Liquidator as Auditors in the Companies under liquidation. The applicants who are interested may submit their bio-data/application inter alia stating (i) the details of income during the last 3 years. (ii) Furnish recommendations of two practicing Chartered Accountants having atleast 10 years practice, (iii) no disciplinary proceedings are pending.
The process of organizing the 11th ICSI National Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance 2011 which was instituted in the year 2001 by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India has commenced. The Award aims to identify corporates which best establish and follow good corporate governance norms in letter and spirit. The award is based on the outcome of concerted and comprehensive process which includes the evaluation of responses of the participating companies to questionnaires designed by the Institute.
The Convocation for the newly enrolled Members admitted during the period September, 2010 to February, 2011 will be held as per schedule given below with a view to inculcate a sense of belongingness and attachment with the Institute.
