Income Tax New Portal – Linking of Aadhaar with PAN

Linking of Aadhaar with PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a mandatory requirement under Income Tax Act 1961. If a person fails to link Aadhaar with PAN by the prescribed last date, a penalty of Rs1000 for the non-linkage will be charged, and also, his PAN will become inoperative – Section 234H inserted vide Finance Act 2021

The prescribed last date of linking PAN with Aadhaar is 30th June 2021. The PAN will become inoperative from 01 July 2021 in the absence of its linkage with Aadhaar. The individual, whose PAN becomes inoperative will not be able to use PAN to conduct the financial transactions wherever quoting of PAN is mandatory such as the opening of a bank account etc.

View Aadhaar link Status: A person can check the status of his Aadhaar link by visiting the income tax e-filing website  www.incometax.gov.in even without login.

A message will display Link Aadhaar status.

If the status is showing, “PAN is Not Linked to Aadhaar” , the same can be linked thru e-Filing Portal.

The Link Aadhaar service is available to individual taxpayers (both registered and unregistered) on e-Filing who have a valid PAN and Aadhaar number.

 Step-by-Step Guide to Link Aadhaar with PAN

Linking without Login to the Portal   

(a) Go to the e-Filing portal homepage, and click Link Aadhaar

(b) On the Link Aadhaar page, enter your PAN, Aadhaar Number, Name as per Aadhaar and a valid Mobile Number

(c) You will receive a 6-digit OTP on your mobile. On the Verification page, enter the Mobile OTP and click Validate.

(d) On success, you will get a message about your Aadhaar-PAN linking request being sent to UIDAI.

Linking with Login to the Portal

(a) On your Dashboard, under the Link Aadhaar to PAN option, click Link. You can also access this service from My Profile > Link Aadhaar

(b) On the Link Aadhaar page, your Name, Date of birth (DOB), and Gender as per PAN will be pre-filled and non-editable. Enter your Aadhaar Number and Name as per Aadhaar.

(c) If you have only year of birth in your Aadhaar card, click I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card. It is mandatory to select I agree to validate my Aadhaar details. Then, click Link Aadhaar.

(d) You may need to lodge a request (e-Nivaran) or contact the e-Filing Helpdesk to un-link Aadhaar and PAN if:

• • your Aadhaar is linked with some other PAN
  • your PAN is linked with some other Aadhaar

(e) On successful validation, a message will display your Link Aadhaar status.

Linking of Aadhaar and PAN thru SMS: . Send an SMS from mobile registered with Aadhaar to either of the PAN providers (NSDL or UTIITSL) at 567678 or 56161.

Use this specific format in your SMS: UIDPAN<12-digit Aadhaar><10-digit PAN>. Ensure there are spaces between UIDPAN, your Aadhaar number, and PAN.

Mismatch in Name / Phone Number / Date of Birth in Aadhaar and PAN: The mismatch in details can be corrected either thru TIN-NSDL website or UTIITSL’s PAN Online Portal for PAN correction   or UIDAI Website for correction in Aadhaar details.

UTIITSL PAN Online Portal, www.pan.utiisl.com is a user friendly portal for such services.

Exemption from Aadhaar-PAN linking:-  It is mandatory to quote and linked Aadhaar number while filing income tax return unless specifically exempted.

Aadhaar-PAN linking is presently exempted for the individual who is: –

(a) Not a citizen of India;

(b) Non-resident as per the Income Tax Act, 1961;

(c) Super senior citizen ( age of eighty years or more )

(d) Residing in the States of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya.
