A Pacific Heights housewife will be heading to prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to insider trading and obstruction of justice charges. In her plea agreement, Annabel McClellan says she gleaned confidential information about publicly traded companies by overhearing her husband, Arnold McClellan, then a partner at Deloitte Tax LLC, discussing details of deals he was working on. She then passed the information on to her sister, Miranda Sanders, and brother-in-law, James Sanders, who was involved in a trading business in London, according to the document.

SEC imposed fine of $17.5 mn on Satyam, PW India

In a major development in the Satyam fraud case, US regulators on Tuesday fined the software firm and its auditors PriceWaterhouse India up to $17.5 million for the accounts bungling that went undetected for several years. The US Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) said that Satyam Computer Services have agreed to pay a fine of $10 million towards settlement of charges of fraudulently “overstating the company’s revenue, income and cash balances by more than $1 billion over five years”.

Mahindra Satyam — brand identity of Satyam Computer Services Limited — which recently announced that it had agreed to pay $125 million to settle class action suits in USA, is yet to get Reserve Bank’s nod to transfer the funds, a senior company official said. “It (RBI) wanted some clarifications. We are in the process of submitting documents. It is just a matter of time,” the official told PTI.

SC orders status quo on Rs 617 crore tax demand from Satyam

The Supreme Court today ordered the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to maintain status quo on its demand for Rs 617 crore income tax from Satyam Computer, while asking for a list of the actual liabilities of the scam-h IT information technology (IT) firm. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia directed the CBDT to submit a chart by Friday showing the actual income and tax liabilities of Satyam Computer, now known as Mahindra Satyam.

Indian Accounting Firm Fined $7.5 Million Over Fraud at Satyam

The Indian affiliate of PricewaterhouseCoopers routinely failed to follow the most basic audit procedures, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission said Tuesday as it penalized the firm for its failed audits of Satyam Computer Services, the Indian company that falsely reported more than $1 billion in profits. The S.E.C. and the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board fined the affiliate, PW India, $7.5 million in what was described as the largest American penalty ever against a foreign accounting firm.
