Section 80TTA of the Income-tax Act allows individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) to claim deductions on interest earned from savings account deposits. This deduction is available to both residents and non-residents but excludes senior citizens, who can instead claim deductions under Section 80TTB. Section 80TTB is specifically for resident senior citizens, allowing them to claim deductions on interest income from all types of bank deposits, including fixed deposits. Under Section 80TTA, the maximum deduction is the lower of the actual interest earned or ₹10,000, while Section 80TTB offers a maximum deduction of ₹50,000. Both deductions are only applicable under the regular tax regime and cannot be claimed if the taxpayer opts for the alternative tax regime under Section 115BAC. Additionally, these deductions are not available for firms, associations, or bodies of individuals.

​Ans:  ​​An individual or a HUF deriving income in the nature of interest on deposits in a saving account can claim a deduction under section 80TTA. This deduction is available to every individual or HUF, irrespective of their residential status.

However, if the individual is a senior citizen, he can claim a deduction in respect of interest on deposits under Section 80TTB​. He is not allowed to claim deduction under this provision.

Q3. Who cannot claim a deduction under section 80TTA?

​Ans: Deduction under this provision is not available to any person other than an Individual or HUF. Where interest income is derived in respect of the saving account held by or on behalf of a firm or AOP or BOI, no deduction shall be allowed to the partner or member in such firm or AOP or BOI, as the case may be.
